Save our kids

Friday, November 16, 2007
In Australia, one child is abused every 11 minutes. Woman's Day is now calling on the people in power to wake up and help stop the abuse threatening the future of our kids.

Help Woman's Day save a child's life by joining our fight against abuse.

In July 2007, our sister magazine Take 5 launched a Save Our Kids campaign, calling for the government to appoint a Federal Minister for Children — a person devoted to children's issues in our country, who will co-ordinate child services departments from all states and territories. As it stands, if an abused child's family moves, there is no way to trace them, so thousands of children slip through the cracks.

During their five-week campaign, Take 5 received 7500 petitions from readers around Australia. Now Woman's Day is joining the fight to help our kids.

By signing the Woman's Day petition to appoint a Federal Minister for Children, you can help prevent abuse cases like those we've seen in the news recently: the brutal deaths of Dean Shillingsworth, whose tiny body was stuffed in a suitcase and thrown into a lake; or seven-year-old Shellay Ward, who was found dead in her bed, weighing just 9kg; two-year-old Josh from Queensland, who was allegedly bashed by his father and died; six-month-old Crystal, whose mother was found guilty of manslaughter last week after she told courts how she beat her daughter; a three-year-old girl from NSW who was hospitalised last week after being beaten so badly her injuries were compared to those suffered when hit by a truck.

You can make a difference to every child in Australia who has no hope, no voice, no love.

Act today!

Surely the govt realises this is an issue that demands attention asap...don't they?? Ppl need to know that being a parent (or guardian) is a privilege, not a right!
It sends a chill down my spine when i hear stories like those above. Kids are so innocent and all they want is to be loved and shown affection by family and friends. I can't understand how people can hurt them, mentally and physically. What is the world coming to?
Child abuse is one of the dogest acts to a totaly innocent and helpless human being.
People who halm and neglect children should all be punished!!! Someone needs to take control and stop this child abuse.
More needs to be done. The abused child is never mentally stable until the perp is behind bars then the child will be free. I know.
I despise child abuse. My father tried when I was older and he has ended up a very lonely old man missing out on ever knowing my sons and family. I would do anything to protect my boys and anyone else going through it. Lets get together and put a stop to all of it.
there is NO excuse for child abuse.
this is absolutely disgusting....when i look at my child i *** even begin to imagine half the things that people to would happen to a child just like her. theyre innocent and defenceless against adults. its wrong and its disgusting.those who abuse children in watever form should be punished and dare i say it never to be allowed to have children even around them. children are supposed to be happy and healthy not halfway to being dead either spiritually, emotionally or physically SAVE OUR KIDS
My sister is a social worker and i think they deserve more rights to take children away and away for good!! i do see that maybe in small amount of cases they go to bad foster parents but i dont think they would have been taken away from "good safe homes". it is extremely hard to take a child away even when they desperatly need to be! we need a minister a joint system for Australia harsher penalties for abusers more support for victims. ALL parents should have to take part in a parenting course before they give birth, licenses issued, Government to pay higher wages to those who are trying to help. More money for low income earners, so many fights and abuse start from stress of financial matters, breakfast at all schools more services available to kids at school to be able to speak freely without being scared! Instead of giving out politician pay rises put it into these kids who need our help and dont have a voice!!
It amazes me how little people value childrens lives....you can get 25 years for extortion and a mere 6 mths pat on the wrist and go on with a normal life after ruining a chilids life forever....Then we wonder why our next generation is disfunctional when all our systems seem to do is make it harder to punish those who truly deserve it.....why dont we take abused children to Canberra once a year and let those little children get on the mic and tell what was done to them...will that even make politicians actually start make better decisions for the next generation....A minister for Children is needed but lets hope they dont get all wrapped up in the red tape like the rest.....Here's hoping and praying for a better solution soon
