Joan Collins: Classic Hollywood beauty is over
After 60 successful years in showbiz, Joan Collins has slammed today's Hollywood actresses saying that classic Hollywood beauty is over and the public are "starved of gorgeous people".

In an interview with Hello! magazine the 77-year-old said the faces on today's silver screen have changed dramatically over the years.

"When I was young, everybody on screen was gorgeous," she said.

"I have to say, there aren't that many good looking actresses around today. I mean, there's Angelina Jolie and there's ... Angelina Jolie. Jennifer Aniston is cute, but I wouldn't call her beautiful. She's no Ava [Gardner] or Lana [Turner]."

During her scathing interview, Joan also said that actresses in her day were a lot more glamorous, stylish and cared more about their appearance.

"Perhaps actresses of today, in their desire to be 'taken seriously', feel that being groomed and well put together detracts from their ability," she said.

"Yes, I know fashions change and everyone attempts to look up-to-date but the movie-star styles of the '20s, '30s, '40s and '50s changed radically each decade. What didn't change, however, was their individual style; they were all one-offs."

Apart from their style, Joan also has an issue with the number of Hollywood stars turning to cosmetic surgery rather than ageing gracefully.

"Women who turn to cosmetic procedures look ghastly. They don't look like themselves," she said.

"I quite like the way I look, I'm quite happy with the way I look and I really don't want to change it. In front of the camera my skin probably isn't nearly as good as it used to be. But, I mean, what the hell, everybody's got to get older."

Fashions in clothing, and in whom we find beautiful changes all the time. There was a girl in my school in the 70's who had big lips, curly hair and curves and resembled Scarlett Johansen. Both girls and boys teased her for her big lips and called her fat!(horrbible I know). She would now be considered a great beauty. It is just fashion. Love yourself and who cares what anyone else thinks.
All this coming from a woman with pancake makeup that would stand up by itself, ferocious black leg o'mutton sleeves, heavily drawn-on eyes and an absolutely dreadful looking rose ornament at her neck that threatens to choke the next words that come out of her. Where on earth does she pick up trinkets like that? She is a walking kitsch expo and for most of her career she has specialised in very bad b-grade schlock kitsch. Where's the dignity in that?
Umm Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba...etc have all had nose jobs! Just look at Angelina when she was a teen...massive eyebrows, round and wide bulbous nose! Look at Alba's nose in FLipper....you people are so easy to fool. A beautiful actress is one that for startes can actually act and wears little make-up and has NO SURGERY.
Just her opinion. She is allowed to have one. That woman makes beauty her obsession especially on herself. I would hate to be like that. I want to be comfortable in my skin and not worry about how I look all the time.
anyone with half of a brain can clearly see she's got something done on her face...all these extreme makeup, pancake face is NOT beauty or glamour!!! I rather look at real natural beauty and there are plenty in hollywood as these actresses are not afraid to show
I would like to see a complete change of fashion hit the scene with the feminine WOW factor. What about starting with hairstyles, soft flattering waves with shine and bounce!
Aniston isn't attractive and she lacks class. Walking about with iced nipples and stripping for magazines proves she lacks class and dignity. She is therefore as unattractive inside as well as she looks masculine on the outside. Angelina is beautiful and classy and dignified always, she is a natural beauty and she has a heart of gold. At least the classics like Joan Collins have good taste and recognise class and beauty when she sees it.
Many years ago (70's), my daughters and I were visiting the "Bird Sanctuary" that was located on the Spit at the Gold Coast where now is Seaworld. We were looking at where a crocodile was located in a pool within the sanctuary when this attractive lady dressed in pink shorts, shirt and cap, dark hair, also with her two daughters approached. I, having always been a fan of glamorous movies, recognised this lady as Joan Collins !!! I was a bit overawed, but managed to say.."Aren't you Joan Collins?" She was very gracious, asked questions about the crocodile, the girls chatted to each other. A big burly man, clearly her security, was not far away. I have never forgotten that encounter and what a lovely woman she seemed to be. Elegant and classy.
Jennifer Aniston is someone who has made the best of her girl-next-door looks but Joan is right, Angelina is pure glamour. Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Joan, Ava, Grace Kelly. Maybe few more top class looking models turned actors, like Jennifer Hawkins, or Linda Evangelista or Christy Turlington lookalikes.
How right she is! Same goes for the men.
