What the doctor said, had it not been for this dog, if he had let me leave that house, she would have either bled to death or the aneurysm would have killed her.

A six-year-old pit bull is being hailed as a hero for not just saving his owner’s life once — but twice.

John and Gloria Benton of Lawrenceville in the US have owned the pooch, named Titan, since he was a puppy.

This week Titan was honored by The Humane Society of the United States for his heroism and saving Gloria’s life. He is now second runner up for the society's 5th Annual Dogs of Valor Awards.

Last year when John was leaving for work, he sent Titan back upstairs to keep Gloria company while she was recovering from back surgery.

But Titan became agitated running back and forth between the couple’s bedroom and front door, which John says, was unusual behavior.

Titan then stood between John and the door. John went back upstairs to find that his wife had suffered an aneurysm and had fractured her skull and immediately took her back to hospital.

"What the doctor said, had it not been for this dog, if he had let me leave that house, she would have either bled to death or the aneurysm would have killed her,” John said.

“And it's a, like I said, we owe a whole lot to this little rascal. It's not about the breed but the way they are raised.”

Eight weeks ago, Titan came to Gloria’s rescue again. He woke John up one morning after Gloria took a tumble in the bathroom and fractured her hip.

Gloria has the same admiration and love for the pooch, despite not being too keen on having a pet dog in the house at first.

“He is so special. And you just can't give him enough love. He loves to be loved on," she said.

"And to think I was mad at him when my son brought it home five years ago."

Titan is lapping up his new found stardom and was even asked to be a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, but unfortunately he couldn’t make it.

Love armchair experts. Really do! There is not a single shred of credible evidence that suggests that "just because an animal has been bred for a purpose, doesn't mean it will fit into the category of which it was purposely bred to do once it's born". Not all Thoroughbreds bred from race horses that have won lots of races, end up being as good as their parents at racing. Same goes for pitbulls and sight hounds. Just because it's bred to do something specific for hundreds of years, doesn't mean it will naturally have the ability, nor the instinct to do what its ancestors were bred to do. I am a firm believe that it is more a combination of poor socialisation, boredom and mistreatment that causes dogs of ALL sizes to bite and be aggressive. You will find statistically speaking that Chihuahua's, Golden Retrievers and Labradors have higher bite statistics. Pitbulls can do more damage biting, but they rarely do it! Especially NOT to people. They were bred as "Nanny dogs" originally!
i personally onwed 3 pitbulls they are the best dogs to have my male bruno used to be in a bad home and he is a sweetheart n they used to fight him he was around cats and other pets
Glad to see a pitbull media coverage that is not based on fear mongering and sensationalisation!! Sure they were originally bred to fight other dogs like sharpeis & staffies but beauty about life & genetics is that it takes both nature and nurture to create the final outcome, sure sigh hounds were bred to kill small animals - but I know many sighthounds that have been socialised to live with other small animals and live peacefully with them.. kelpies and cattle dogs were bred to herd - yet you will come across many in the breed that don't have the instinct - genetics does not make up everything and the best thing about genetics is that it can be changed and selected for! Ban the deed not the breed, the more people are educated about dog behaviour and socailisation the more in harmony we will be able to live - breed bans have not been effective in reducing bite stats - its time to face the truth and stop the unnecessary killing of family pets based on looks!
in the United States the Pit Bull and the Amstaff are looked at as the same dog breed BUT there not. the Pit Bull IS a fighting dog and the Amstaff is a family dog but to look at they look the same its there breeding Lines that makes them diffrent, I have a Amstaff and they are legal in OZ where the Pit Bull is illegal. My point is I say this couple would have a Amstaff not a Pitbull and it is in the breeding more then the raising..
To Sorry it's in the breeding, actually they were originally bred to be "Nanny" dogs...yes, to mind children!!- it's only in this day & age they are used for the revolting practice of dog-fighting. And it is ALWAYS how they are raised & trained, just like ANY BREED! In the line of work, I've come across pit-bulls & every single one of them were beautiful gentle creatures, yet I've still got physical scars from an unprovoked attack by a nasty little maltese. Blame the deed NOT THE BREED!
I own 2 grey hounds , and find them the most affectionus dogs around , when i hurt my back and was in bed for a week one stayed with me on the bed to keep me company every time I groaned she would come up and give me a lick on the face to let me know somewon was with me so its how you rear an animal that counts douglas
'Sorry - it is in the breeding!' please shutup.
Good to finally here some good news about the breed 'Pitbull' perhaps this animal has been rasied by loving people ! Yet we always have the negative people putting down the breed when I bet non have actually owned a breed as such in their life. Dont judge by what goes on the news, we all know the news thrives on negativit. Have your own opinions , dont go on whats put on the news or here say, you will get no where in life.
i believe it is in the breeding. you can raise an animal in great conditions and it will still be agressive if that is it's nature. we had to give away 2 dogs in the past because they showed aggression from puppyhood and we have 2 small children whose safety must come first. any dog can be aggressive or docile, each dog is different and most of the time it doesn't matter how it is raised.
You obviously no nothing about dogs
