Question
I recently adopted a five-year-old male cat from a friend. But this former outdoor cat that was the neighbourhood enforcer is now an absolute sook. He hides under the bed all day, only coming out to eat and for the occasional pat. I'd love him to spend more time outside but it seems far from his mind. Why?

Answer
It's quite a transformation! But not such a surprise when you realise that, just like us, cats derive most of their confidence from their surroundings. In reality, your cat's gone from being the king of his old neighbourhood to the new kid in a new school. And until he can get answers to the crucial cat questions (like who's in charge around here?) he's going to be very tentative indeed; worried that he's just one wrong step away from a bad encounter with the local feline law enforcer.
But fortunately for you, time is telling him the answers. Provided no other cats make a play for his territory then he'll soon realise that it's his for the taking.
Over the next few weeks, he will increase the distance he feels comfortable straying from the bedroom. All you need to do is stay patient and be sure to keep other cats away from your house and yard. The confidence will come. Then, once again, he will be king!
