Foot focus should be flip-flops

Friday, October 23, 2009

The common command from Mum to "put your shoes on" could soon change to "put your thongs on", if new research proves to be true.

Children could soon be flip-flopping their way around the schoolyard with experts suggesting that the best shoe should mimic the barefoot.

With a focus on feet, Sydney University researcher Alex Chard is working to eliminate the bad image of thongs and says the common summer essential could be better for children's feet than closed-in school shoes.

Despite health professionals and parents often discouraging thongs as suitable footwear, Chard says there is no hard evidence to suggest they are inadequate to other types of shoe.

"The latest research has found that there is more motion within the arch of the foot than previously thought," he says.

"It might be the case that flexible things can actually assist in developing the 16 muscles within each foot, helping Australian children to improve their sporting prowess."

Chard's research team, from the foot and ankle research unit, will conduct a study of children aged seven to 13 to test the motion of the child's foot in closed-in shoes, thongs or bare feet.

Computer animation will be used to determine whether thongs are suitable when children are running, walking and stepping sideways.

The research will take place at the university's Lidcombe campus. Sydneysiders who would like their child to take part in the survey should contact Alex Chard on 0419 436 633.

Your say: Do you think thongs are appropriate footwear for children?

Thongs are great, but unsafe. That is the reason why most schools don't allow opened-toed footwear.

Barefoot is definitely the best to improve the muscles and actions of ankles and feet. I've looked extensively into this topic during my studies and shoes restrict natural movement and weaken various muscles. Barefoot can strengthen these up and fix a host of other problems. Thongs arnt much better in that they too change the way you walk as you always need to grip them with your toes. Problem with barefoot is the pain and chance of cuts so get fivefingers to help eliminate that!
I'd be much more worried about people like "melzy" teaching our kids than what's on their feet. What hope do they have if even their teachers don't use proper grammer and spelling?
Thongs not only have no class but also are cumbersome in protecting feet from injury or sharp items. This is why people don't wear thongs and will continue to wear shoes. Every week there's some rubbish study coming out claiming trash. Can't we please spend this money on something more worthwhile. There's far more important issues at stake than this pile of thongs.
The worst footwear ever invented, put them on your kids, not only do they talk like ducks,as they get older they'll walk like ducks. And they are realy realy dangerous. We one saw a kid have her big toe torn off, after getting it caught in the esculator in a shopping centre.Realy good for your feet.Give us a break please.
Generally, the biggest problem I have found with things is the inability to help keep my child's foot safe in dangerous areas, such as pathways with broken glass, and in playgrounds where needles are unfortunately scattered around the place. The old thong cannot do much to stop the penetration of such objects.
Just to give you southern fairies a good laugh, school kids up around Cairns qld don't have to wear ANY shoes until they reach highschool. It's mainly cause of the wet (or maybe the extra toes), but there is clearly no harm done from not having closed in shoes as a child. It's high time we ditched the old customs best suited for europe and adopted the ones that the original aussies knew worked here.
I am a HUGE fan of thongs because they obviously allow your feet to breathe and keep cool, but to be honest I never really found them that comfortable until I found MUSH. OMG, these thongs are made of something from heaven, they are soooooo soft it's like walking on pillows, but they are very cool. They are made by a brand called Teva ... Google them, you won't regret it. I PROMISE !!!
Running and stepping sideways in thongs? Are these researchers on drugs? Just give me the research dollars and I'll provide the answer, NO. Kids would always just take their thongs off when playing. But I doubt schools will let kids run barefoot nowdays.
