Woman's Day fitness trainer and former paratrooper James Menage says flabby arm syndrome is on the rise.
"You can cover up legs and bottoms, but many women lament their flabby 'tuckshop lady arms' or 'batwings' because they're often bared to the world."
"The good news," says James, "is you can sculpt arms quite quickly, with some focused arm exercises.
The bad news? "You won't notice definition if your muscles are covered in fat."
Here are James's top two toning arm exercises that you can do each day.
Power push-ups
- Start with arms shoulder-width apart, and with your knees on the ground if you want an easy option.
- Lower yourself to the ground and push back up. Do three sets of 10-15.
The armchair burn
- Start with arms straight and knuckles facing forwards on the chair, and legs bent at
90 degrees.
- Lower body to floor and return to start position.
- Repeat 12-15 times. Do three sets.
- For added intensity, start with legs straighter.
Top tip
"Remember, if you have high blood pressure, holding your breath in while doing push-ups or in fact any weight training can raise blood pressure to a dangerous level," says James. "Keep breathing through the entire exercise."
