Trampolines too dangerous to use, health experts say

US health experts are calling for a ban on backyard trampolines because they are too dangerous and cause an excessive number of injuries.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that netting and other safety equipment does not reduce injury.

In 2009 there were almost 98,000 trampoline-related injuries in the US which resulted in 3,100 hospitalisations.

“Paediatricians need to actively discourage recreational trampoline use,” says Dr Michele LaBotz, co-author of an updated policy statement on the use of trampolines in the US.

“Families need to know that many injuries occur on the mat itself, and current data does not appear to demonstrate that netting or padding significantly decrease the risk of injury.”

Kate Fraser from Australia’s Kidsafe playground advisory unit told Woman’s Day that banning trampolines may be taking things a little too far.

“It would be a sad day for Australia if the backyard trampoline was banned, however, we recognise that some injuries do occur,” Kate said.

The US report found that children under the age of five were most at risk of serious hurt, with 48 per cent of injuries in this age group involving fractured or dislocated bones. Other common complaints included sprains, strains and contusions. According to the AAP, these injuries still occurred despite parental supervision.

It was also found that 75 per cent of trampoline injuries occur when more than one person is jumping on the mat at the same time.

“The recommendations from this organisation appear to focus on the risk of injury, rather than the benefits of using a trampoline,” Kate Fraser says.

“Trampolines do come with some risks, and knowledge of these risks requires parents and carers to be mindful of the set-up of the trampoline in their backyard. We all want our kids to grow up to be happy, healthy adults and equipment such as trampolines offers many more benefits than risks of injury.”

These benefits include coordination development, physical fitness, core strength development and body schema awareness.

“Children love to trampoline because it is so much fun – many adults also love to trampoline for the same reasons,” Kate says.

“However, the benefits are not just physical, as children learn to take turns, act as a ‘spotter’ for the ‘jumper’, or play ball games with the ‘jumper’ from ground level.”

Here are Kate’s tips for safe trampoline use:

  • Full-sized trampolines are not recommended for children under six, however there are a lot of different sized trampolines on the market that are suitable. It is important to consider the overall size of the mat, the bounce and the height of the trampoline.
  • When purchasing a trampoline, ensure that it complies with the Australian Standard. Look for the Standards ticks or product marking that demonstrates this compliance.
  • Avoid setting up on hard surfaces and ensure that the trampoline is stable.
  • No pets on the trampoline!
  • Maintain pads, nets and springs, and follow any specific manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Parents should actively supervise kids on the trampoline
  • If your child shows a keen interest in trampolining, consider enrolling them in a class. It is a terrific way to develop interests/hobbies and engage in ongoing regular physical activity .

Good grief can't kids be kids? I fell off a pony and broke my arm - the pony and I lived to tell the tale (that was 50 odd years ago when life wasn't sooooo precious!) Unfortunately, accidents are a part of life but common sense will help prevent the greater majority of them - that's all it takes.
Trampolines are a fantastic way for kids to have fun and exercise at the same time. If you're worried just buy a spring free one from New Zealand. I would buy one but I can't afford it! We have just purchased a very cheap one off Ebay and will dig into the ground like we did with our old one. The term 'cottonwooling' comes to my mind. I'm not into that kind of parenting myself. I reckon just supervise them and teach some skills about staying safe. Whatever will they tell us we can't do next....
I was just speaking to one our employees who told me that he dug his trampoline into the ground (obviously a hole underneath) so that there was no need for steps and his children could bounce away happily. He left the safety guards around so that the springs were covered and also the netting was still surrounding it, the only difference is it is now at ground level. Sometimes it pays to think outside the box - I think he's very clever!
Thats why American kids are so obese. Ban anything that means they get exercise, its all too 'dangerous'. Just eat your burgers and sit infront of the telly, then sue someone when you pull a hammy lifting your fat legs off the floor.
in response to DLK, mate have you seen the state of TV in the last year, Im too scared to let my kids watch TV as just about all of it is garbage now, and its got nothing to do with violence, I myself watched all the 'naughty and violent' bugs bunny and road runner cartoons, things that had kid humor and adult humor in them, the kids laugh at the kids stuff and the adults laugh at kids and adults stuff, the kids then look at the adults and think that it must be funny so they laugh too, but now there is only adult humor aimed at kids and they wonder what the worlds coming too!
Really? Again? Let me guess soon bicycles, scooter, skates and skateboard will be next. Since when did we say it isn't ok to have an accident? I had heaps as a kid and learned about my physical boundaries, so why do the hob nobs think that this is not a normal part of society and growing up. Ihitnk they are the ones with an issue......it's called tyranny.
I used to compete in trampolining professionally, but before I started training properly we had always had a trampoline in the backyard. It's not dangerous when you have someone supervising a small child. Not only supervisions though, you need to look at what kind of trampoline you are getting, it must always have pads over the springs, or get the one with the safety nets. I never hurt my self as a child because I always had my mum or dad watching me and we weren't allowed to have more than one person on the trampoline for obvious reasons. You can't just ban a trampoline, that is ridiculous!
Trampolines help co-ordination and the reason why they are used with children with developmental delay is that it helps co-ordinate the integration of the brain hemispheres. This generation is going to be pathetically weak and scardy cats if we don't let them experience a certain level of risk.
My God ! Let's just ban walking while we're at it, it can be quite dangerous. Perhaps we should encourage our kids to sit in front of the t.v or X-box all day with no exercise....The world gets madder every day !!!
There are not many Australian back gardens without a trampoline, I couldn’t wait to get one for our son (5) last Christmas, and he loves it. Our younger son (1.5) who can’t really jump goes on stands up falls and thinks its great fun. Yes there are dangers and bones will break, the most serious injury I got growing up was falling off my bike at very low speed, hitting my elbow off the curb and dislocating it, took 6 months to get it back to normal but I didn’t stop playing on bikes. Children need these experiences growing up, because it’s a big world out there with more dangers than trampolines. I am all for letting children be children and have their fun but learning a bit about risk and consequence goes a long way towards creating sensible mature adults. Or we could let them learn on video games where you lose a life if you stuff up, but if you Google for a day you can find the cheat code for infinite lives, yep that will prepare our children for the real world!
