The Blakey family

“What happens to kids over 6?”

“My son Samuel is 12 years old and has Asperger's Syndrome which is an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Sam is homeschooled due to anxiety and bullying that has occurred.

My 'beef is with the availability of financial support for therapy that my son needs.

The government has introduced an autism scheme that enables families to receive $10 000 to go towards therapy.

The only catch with this is that your child has to be under six-years-old. What happens then to the children over six who need therapy?

My son needs therapy with a psychologist, speech therapist and an occupational therapist but unfortunately I can't afford it so he misses out on being given the best opportunity for the future. Australia is so behind in supporting people with disabilities.”

Do you want to help the Blakey family?

Take 30 seconds to sign the Mad as Hell pledge.

The pledge calls for people to vote in the next Federal and State elections, for the political party which publicly promises to transform Australia’s broken, inefficient, crisis-driven disability support system.

We have had the same problem for our child as older kids don't get to access therapy and the private therapists are very cost prohibitive. It is hard to bear when you know there may be some help out there but your child can't get access to necessary therapies purely because you can't afford it. As if we don't have enough guilt heaped on us as parents..
It is about time that people with disabilites and there families were given a voice for the politicians to listen that there is a dire need for this scheme to help people of all ages who have or aquifre a disbility throughout there lives to access the help and the support they need. i have a son with a mild intellectual disability and there is not a lot of help for him as he has no behaviours and he is not bad enopugh to warrant any support other than through Eduacation Queensland, so this should be able to help hima nd many others like him in the community.
