Pregnant women exposed to pesticides are more likely to have hyperactive children

Friday, August 20, 2010
It's long been known that certain chemicals found in everyday products can be harmful to humans so new research confirming the link between pesticides and ill-health will not come as a shock to many.

However, the alarming factor here is that the ill effects can be caused by exposure as early as foetal development, prompting hyper activity attention deficit disorder (ADHD) in childhood.

The study found that children whose mothers were exposed to crop sprays while they were pregnant with them were more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD by the age of five.

"We were especially interested in prenatal exposure because that's the period when a baby's nervous system is developing most," said Brenda Eskenazi, professor of maternal and child health at the University of California.

It is believed that the powerful chemicals in pesticides used to keep crops free from insect pests can damage the development of the central nervous system and brain by affecting attention and short-term memory.

Amy Marks, lead researcher on the study said, "Given that these compounds are designed to attack the nervous system or organisms, there is reason to be cautious, especially in situations where exposure may coincide with critical periods of foetal and child development."

Although the study tested women and children who lived in an agricultural community in the United States, the findings point to a significant impact on the general population.

"It's known that food is a significant source of pesticide exposure among the general population," she said.

"I would recommend thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables before eating them, especially if you're pregnant."

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurobehavioural development disorder which symptoms include both attention problems and hyperactivity, which start before seven years of age.

The psychiatric disorder affects 3 to 5 percent of children globally and can continue into adulthood with 30 to 50 percent of those diagnosed as children suffering symptoms in later life.

"High levels of symptoms of ADHD by age five are a major contributor to learning and achievement problems in school, accidental injuries at home and in the neighbourhood, and a host of problems in peer relationships and other essential competencies," Professor Stephen Henshaw, a leading expert on ADHD in America told the Daily Mail.

Having come from a farming background I'm alarmed at the excessive use of farm chemicals used in agriculture. I keep telling the farmers that chemicals are short term gain for long term pain. They don't listen because it allows them to spray large areas of farm land (with their 30-40 metre boom sprays) and crop large areas with minimal labour. Farm chemicals where derived from chemical warfare from the 1950's and adapted for farm use by American corporations for PROFIT!. Therefore it's not surprising at the effect it's having on the general populace by the uncontrolled use that applies at the present time. A lot of spraying is done at night as it's more effective, but not seen by the public, or the authorities.
Any Australian farmers supplying food into the market have to undergo a vigerous chemical users course, keep accurate details and abide by the witholding periods and supply full documentation to the purchasers of the food on what chemicals and when they were used.Chemicals are expensive and only applied at a last resort. If the puplic were prepared to pay more fo organic food and those dollars were passed to the farmers and not retained by the supermarkets ,there would be a massive swing to organics. At the moment it is not profitable for all farmers. The biggest concern is cheap imported food being imported with little traceability on the use of chemicals from other countrys. You do not know what you are buying. This is evident with the problems of some food from China with high levels of melamine in baby formula to name one example. Australian farmers have to jump through hoops to get their produce into supermarkets while the overseas product gets in scott free.
In the article, it is recommended that fruit and vegetables be thoroughly washed before eating. However, this will not remove all pesticide residue for a couple of reasons 1. the chemicals are designed to stick to the fruit and veges and withstand rain 2. many chemicals are taken up inside the plant and can't be washed off. The only sure way to be free of pesticides and chemicals is to eat organic fruit and veges (or grow your own).

She had 2 girls from her marriage, however I had none. We are now married and have a son of our own, I love him in a way I don't think I could ever love the girls, I feel guilty saying it, but I think it's built in me, almost primitively. I love the girls, I will always protect them and do what is right for them, but there is a difference. My wife has noticed it, and apparently so do the girls. The difference between my situation and the original writer is........I came from an abusive step-mother relationship, both mental and physical and although I feel I can't be the perfect step-dad, I will never do to those girls what was done to me.Spot On, brisbane18 CommentsPost commentView comments Darren Hayes dishes: I know the real DeltaDarren Hayes dishes: I know the real DeltaI love her !!wiz, melbourne16 CommentsPost commentView comments Grant and Candice: Why they splitGrant and Candice: Why they splitGive the guy a break!
