Tap VS Bottled water: Which is best?

Do you drink bottled or tap water?
"... the high levels of bacteria in bottled water could pose a risk for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, infants, immunocompromised patients and the elderly..."
Next time you want a drink of water, don't dismiss the good old tap.

According to new Canadian research, bottled water holds more bacteria than tap water.

The study conducted by a team of 70 scientists from the C-crest Laboratories in Montreal found that bottled water is not as pure as first thought.

"Heterotrophic bacteria counts in some of the bottles were found to be in revolting figures of 100 times more than the permitted limit," Microbiologist Dr Sonish Azam, who worked on the study, said.

"Bottled water is not expected to be free from microorganisms but the [level] observed in this study is surprisingly very high."

She said that there is no need to drink bottled water if good quality tap water is available.

"Unsurprisingly, the consumer assumes that since bottled water carries a price tag, it is purer and safer than most tap water," she said.

Despite the study finding large amounts of bacteria in bottled water, Dr Azam said this bacteria was not likely to cause disease.

"But the high levels of bacteria in bottled water could pose a risk for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, infants, immunocompromised patients and the elderly," she said.

The Dieticians Association of Australia's Queensland spokesperson Julie Gilbert said if good quality tap water is available, it is the best option.

"If on the rare occasion tap water is unsafe, bottled water is a good alternative," she said.

The DDA does not believe bottling water is good practice when we have a safe water supply in Australia.

"Bottled water is a healthy option when tap water is not available, convenient or safe," she said.

"And bottled water is a better choice than other packaged drinks. When eating away from home, DAA recommends taking a reusable water bottle from home, or asking for tap water."

tap water is better even The Dieticians Association of Australia's Queensland spokesperson Julie Gilbert said so and i think shes right
Get a life, we should all be drinking the water straight from the sky. Go back to the days when rainwater tanks were in everyones backyard. Not just the trendies. Try drinking rainwater from and old fashioned water bag, as cool and sweet as you have ever tasted.Cup your hand and taste water from a running river or creek no refrigerators needed , cold and sweet on the hottest day.
ummm "thisisme" - the whole populations IS dropping like flies . . . it's called CANCER . . .
Fish is an important part of eating healthy, as it has omega 3's. There is nothing wrong with it, so long as you are not eating the kind that comes from vietnam.
If you can afford bottled water and like it, then drink it. However, just remember that tap or town water has been in reticulation for many, many years. Neither is statistically likely to kill you, or even make you sick, especially in Australia. This isn't worth debate. What is worth debate is how to guarantee the world's fresh water supply, and how to get it to where it's needed...
Realy if you think you get sick from tap water and not bottled water your crazy! its all in your head like other ppl have said it is good for your teeth and what not, tap water taste better then any bottled water!! i would bet that you have your bottled water cold? so must taste better? crazy!!! Tap water all the way!!!! or you could go have your magic water whatever makes you feal special
Even better would be to install a reverse osmosis (RO) system with a mineraliser after the RO membrane to add back some of the trace elements. We should not pay to much attention to the debate about bottled water versus tap water as it makes sense that any additives to pure water should not be there nor should an excessively high bio-burden and you can take responsibility yourself to ensure your water is of the highest quality and purity buy installing your own system and monitoring the quality of your own drinking water which is very affordable and costs less over the long term then bottled water. We agree that bottled spring water contains more bacteria then tap water. It seems this article simplifies the situation in that there are different types of bottled water like bottled purified water and our last coli form reading was the lowest reading possible. There are over 7,000 substances in tap water with recent studies pointing to chlorine and fluoride having harmful side effects with long term usage and your body not being able to assimilate these chemicals resulting in a build up in your system whereas most bacteria are normally more easily dealt with by your body. We agree that that drinking tap water with a filter system to remove the chlorine and a range of contaminants, the minimum being a 3 stage filter with a sediment water filter, a KDF activated carbon combination filter and a 0.5uM activated carbon block filter. www.splishwater.com.au
I've been drinking tap water all my life and I've never become sick from it. As for these people who argue that flouride is dangerous, it is only dangerous in large amounts. The amount of flouride in our tap water is very, very small, therefore it's harmless. Anyone who claims to have been sick from drinking tap water is clearly very uneducated. The cause of their illness is influenza or some sort of gastroenteritis. If tap water were that harmful, the entire population would be dropping like flies. But it's not, so it's safe to say there's nothing wrong with tap water.
Just get a water filter 'osmosis' type for the tap....problem solved. those filters remove just about everything, bacteria, algae, heavy metals, chlorine, the evil fluoride.....yes....evil problem solved. and yes, Canadian research. What has that got to do with Aus water....NOTHING! just a hyped story by the companies pushing flouride into our tap water. You dont need any fluoride if you brush your teeth! and even if you didnt brush often, fluoride will make NO difference!

Being gay and telling the world, is nothing to be proud about. Gay marriage is a farce. Marrige is a contract between a man and a woman. If a gay couple choose to have a binding contract, then it should be called, something else, not marriage. I really hope Julia stands firm on this, and does not give into minority groups. Although, going by her past form, anything is possible. I don't know who she is, but from what I have just read I feel that she's trying to be a good Mum and Grandma. Her daughter was pregnant at 16 (same age as my eldest) and she has stood by her. She's given her daughter and grandchild a home, no doubt also the clothes on their backs and food on the table. While it certainly isn't a parent's dream to see their child as young as that have their own child, good for her for turfing her out. Good luck to their family and now I'm going to google to find out who the grandmother is!Aunt Pol, QLD18 CommentsPost commentView comments Magda Szubanski comes out in support of gay marriageMagda Szubanski comes out in support of gay marriageMarriage is defined as the union between a man and a woman back in Genesis. If the homosexuals must have a legalised process call it a Sodom or a Gomorrah or something like that, because that is historic and has a meaning to it. Making something up just to suit themselves doesn't make it right - there is no background, history or truth in it - they are just trying to morally justify themselves with something that doesn't ring true.Callitwhatitis, NSW14 CommentsPost commentView comments
