Want to live longer? Get some shuteye!
Sleep is important because it is a period of rest and recuperation for the body and brain.

We all know most of the benefits of getting a good night's sleep, but new European research has found that it not only benefits our everyday health and wellbeing, it can also help us live longer.

Research conducted by the University of Warwick and the University of Naples Federico II found poor sleepers who get less than six hours of sleep a night were 12 percent more likely to die prematurely.

The research found seven hours of sleep was ideal and those who did get that amount of shuteye would live a longer and healthier life.

Achieving this amount of sleep is a challenge for around 20 percent of Australians who have a disturbed sleep, the late Harry Teichtahl from the Australasian Sleep Association said in a 2007 Pfizer Australia media release.

Teichtahl said 20 percent of Australians reported being disturbed between three and five times every night, while close to two-thirds reported difficulty going to sleep.

The health report also found that two-in-five Australians say they do not wake up feeling refreshed.

"Insomnia is often caused by worrying," Teichtahl said.

"This, combined with the long hours and stresses of our 24-hour society, is a recipe for leaving the majority of the population living in a constant state of fatigue. Not a healthy, or safe, way to live," he said.

"Sleep is important because it is a period of rest and recuperation for the body and brain. Using medications to aid insomnia only masks the problem and those people who are in the habit of having an afternoon nap and trying to sleep in on the weekend are only reinforcing the cycle of poor sleeping patterns."

But the new research findings shouldn't be taken as an open invitation to sleep in too much, too often. The research found that sleeping more than nine hours a night could indicate a serious underlying illness.

It is easy to find your proper amount of sleep. Simply set your alarm clock for a set time in the morning and religiously get up at that time for 2 weeks. The key is to only go to sleep when you feel tired (ignore the afternoon tiredness that everybody seems to get). This also stops you mind talking to yourself and not falling asleep, you SHOULD be tired when you go to sleep. Now the point where you begin to want to go to sleep every night should give you a good indication of the amount of sleep you need (it will fluctuate at the beginning and be hard to maintain but it will balance out, trust me). Too much sleep and too little sleep are bad for you, I personally function best on aprox. 7 hours of sleep and I usually wake up without the need for an alarm clock. I used to sleep ten hours a day and would wonder why I was so tired when I got up, then I did this trick and just feel better in general. Also before sleep try to do something relaxing e.g. read a book, bath or whatever.
Most of the time i don't get to sleep till late, no matter how tired i am when its time to sleep i always find something worry about. And to think that if you don't get enough sleep your life will be shorter well thats just worse! I'm sick of worrying about stupid things when i want to sleep, i wish i didnt worry at all!!
sleep is something that is often taken for granted especially by those who can sleep well. As a doctor informed, sleep deprivation was or is actually used as a form of torture. Try driving with little or no sleep. Used to think as a young person you could sleep any time any where and catch up whenever usually on weekends. But now as an older person with insomnia, sleep or getting to sleep almost has to be relearnt so one can even function with some normality for life. Grab a book froma library or check online for some scientific study of sleep and the various stages of sleep. It will give a real insight of sleep in our normal processes. Good night and good luck
That describes me to a tee! Except I still feel stuffed on 7 hours. My own fault. By the time I get home from work and relax with my wife it is 1 to 2 hours past bed time so I build up a sleep debt for the weekend. Then it's 9 to 10 hours. Then repeat the whole thing the following week. It's a rare treat to wake up feeling full of vim an vigour. Maybe I should pay attention to this article...
George. If there is mind chatter when you are going to bed, then I'd suggest keeping a pen and paper on your bedside table and writing down your thoughts. Once they are written down you can have a to-do list for the following day or week, get them done and your mind will eventually be at ease when going to sleep. Also, DON'T EAT LATE. Have your evening meal by 7pm at the latest. Having energy when going to bed doesn't help you sleep (nor help your waistline)
I kind of think that there would be some sort of cancelling out, living longer by sleeping more - interesting proposition I'm thinking that the conscious hours are going to be similiar in the final wash I'll bet Harry wishes he was awake
Adding some thought 1. Diagnose your problem for poor sleep, do something about it! 2. Have your bedding comfortable. Remember, there is a messure between comfort and discomfort people seem to forget! Tossing and turning, hard to get to sleep, waking up with pain, stiff necks, sore back, etc. equals an uncomfortable mattress! Research shows us that a major part of the reason people struggle to achieve a good sleep is due to their posture, hence the mattress they are currently using. Regardless of problems concerning back pains or neck pains developed from work, or other causes, we still need to ensure we are addressed and supported as we are while sleeping. We obviously are usuing our bodies and spine in bed too. Take care of yourself! 3. Problems occuring as mentioned above? Opt for a mattress which will give you the orthopedic correct posture, i.e, ONLY Orthopedic style mattresses, not the latter, which will allow optimal support and ease your problems your currently having.
afternoon siesta is a must as well.
Sick of always feeling tired. Too much mind chatter going on when I close my eyes. If i wake up during the night, that will be the end of my sleep. Where do you get the adjustable massage beds from. I am willing to try anything to get a good night sleep.
interesting to know about how important we need more sleeps..

For all these people who have commented " you don't know what it's like to be a step parent" blah blah blah.... who are you trying to kid?? And for those saying that you have your own kids and step kids and the step kids are manipulative etc etc, are you blind and dumb? Your kids are not perfect either i bet! I bet your kids are just as rude when you are not around! I have a 12 year old daughter and i have been with my partner for 5 years. He struggles alot with my daughter because she gives him hell. She has said several times she wishes it was just me and her again, but because my partner loves me he sticks it out and knows that it's just her trying to get her own way. He loves her and would do anything for her no matter what she does, that's what's good parents do. If you can't warm to a child or don't like your soon to be step child then dont marry the parent. You are just being selfish otherwise. Just imagine if the shoe was on the other foot...b81die, Brisbane29 CommentsPost commentView comments

Yes the type of cancer was one of the least lethal but none the less she had cancer attacking her body. she had chemo, i've watched some of my closest friends on chemo and it is always so horrific. She has pushed past that and made brilliant songs. Her music is heartfelt. She sis so beautiful and in her flim clips she dresses with dignity and respect unlike other artist who just let everything hang out and sing about sex, drugs and alcohol. She was put on the voice because she is ment to be there the people who run the show chose her. don't like it ? simple don't watch it. If you don't like her as an artist fine, don't buy her albums.
