Do you need to see a shrink?

Depression
We all need someone to talk to about life's ups and downs, and most of the time friends and family are there to listen and help. But sometimes it pays to seek professional advice.
"A psychologist is objective – someone who has no vested interest," says Amanda Gordon, a Sydney-based practicing clinical psychologist and President of the Australian Psychological Society.
"And rather than simply offering an opinion, a psychologist will offer solutions based on evidence."
Here Amanda explains some of the more common reasons we might need to speak with a psychologist.
Depression
Depression is the most likely reason for someone to seek help. Paradoxically, depressed people need more help to get to a psychologist because they can't believe there's anything that can make them feel better. This is because when you're depressed, your thinking is inevitably faulty (the glass is half empty, not half full).
If you're feeling flat and not getting enjoyment out of life, and your mood is influencing your ability to make choices, you might need to see a psychologist.
Addiction
Psychologists an help with extreme compulsions which are having a detrimental effect on a person's working life and relationships, such as gambling, shopping and alcohol and other substance abuse in adolescents and adults.
ADHD in kids
Kids can exhibit a huge range of symptoms – including behaving badly and sleep disorders – that can be labelled "ADHD". A psychologist is most skilled to make a diagnosis and support parents in assisting their children with learning and behaviour difficulties.
Eating disorders
Many people suffer in silence when it comes to relating to food and body image. A psychologist can assist with this faulty thinking, to help change behaviour and responses to food and body image.
Lifestyle effects on health
We all know there are things we need to do differently – diet or exercise, smoking, drinking. We may know they're not good for our health, but it's hard to know how to change.
Relationship problems
Relationships are the real core of personal happiness. When relationships go bad it makes us feel like our world is falling apart. Many people are in relationships with potential, but don't have the strategies and resources to make them work.
Also, people can get stuck in a rut and keep repeating old patterns of behaviour within a relationship.
Traumatic events
This includes things like car accidents, being made redundant, the loss of a loved one. Sometimes it's just so hard to "get over it", when something terrible happens. A psychologist can help normalise what's going on and teach strategies to manage the effects of such trauma on the mind and body.
Not every psychologist is an expert in all the above fields – but the Australian Psychological Society (APS) has a referral service to help you find a suitable practitioner for your needs.

Why I left my terminally ill wife
The year of my 21st was the worst year of my life. I had been dealt a double blow six months earlier, when my beautiful dad passed away from stomach cancer and my long-time boyfriend broke up with me. Things were financially stretched as I struggled to get myself through my vet science degree.

True Confessions Agony Aunt: I hate my Stepson
Being a stepmother is my worst nightmare. I never had the desire or yearned children of my own but fell in love with a man who has his son 85 per cent of the time. I thought I could hack it, but I am really at the end of my tether.

Delta exclusive: 'I never said I was perfect!'
Delta had cancer at a very young age, she fought for her life. Yes the type of cancer was one of the least lethal but none the less she had cancer attacking her body. she had chemo, i've watched some of my closest friends on chemo and it is always so horrific. She has pushed past that and made brilliant songs. Her music is heartfelt. She sis so beautiful and in her flim clips she dresses with dignity and respect unlike other artist who just let everything hang out and sing about sex, drugs and alcohol. She was put on the voice because she is ment to be there the people who run the show chose her. don't like it ? simple don't watch it. If you don't like her as an artist fine, don't buy her albums. She is human and she has feelings, give the woman a break.

True Confessions Agony Aunt: I hate my Stepson
I met my partner 5 years ago, she was newly divorced as was I. She had 2 girls from her marriage, however I had none. We are now married and have a son of our own, I love him in a way I don't think I could ever love the girls, I feel guilty saying it, but I think it's built in me, almost primitively. I love the girls, I will always protect them and do what is right for them, but there is a difference. My wife has noticed it, and apparently so do the girls. The difference between my situation and the original writer is........I came from an abusive step-mother relationship, both mental and physical and although I feel I can't be the perfect step-dad, I will never do to those girls what was done to me.

Grant and Candice: Why they split
Give the guy a break! He went to functions, where there was probably free booze, and got drunk on 2 separate occasions. It does sound like maybe he drinks a little too much, but hey free booze who doesn't
