Shannan and Michelle’s new Let’s Live Better campaign is helping children eat and live healthily.
They’ve changed the lives of The Biggest Loser contestants, and now Australia’s most famous trainers – Shannan Ponton and Michelle Bridges – are stepping out of the gym and into school canteens.
“The childhood obesity epidemic in Australia is out of control,” says Shannan. “By the time kids reach 18, one in four is going to be obese, so we are trying to get in and educate the kids that their bodies and minds are going to work better if they eat good, healthy food.”
“It’s so true,” Michelle adds. “They’re going to be able to run faster, play longer and hit the ball further by not choosing to eat junk food.”
The fit duo say filling the trolley with fresh foods is the first step to creating healthy habits.
“It’s important to try to get your kids involved in the shopping process, so make it fun,” Michelle says. “Open up their world to different tastes and textures of food early on.”
Kids can be a great help in the kitchen too, and this will only get them more excited about eating vegies they would usually dismiss. Michelle knows that school lunchboxes can often return home still full, but she’s convinced a few fun tricks can do wonders for kids’ appetites.
“Shannan and I have been going out to the schools where we’ve had sandwiches in lunchboxes shaped like stars or love hearts. The thing that surprised us most was the apple slinky. There were 50 kids lined up to get one and only about 10 kids in line at the tuckshop.”
