British-born chef Ian Curley, host of Seven’s newest reality food offering Conviction Kitchen and a devoted dad of two, gives us a peek inside his fridge.
What’s In Your Fridge?
Avocados: “I have two girls under three, Cassidy and Cooper, and Cooper especially loves tuna with avocado so there’s always lots of avocado in our fridge. I ripen them up and then pop them in the fridge.”
Pumpkin: “I make a lot of pumpkin risotto for the family.”
Tomatoes and spring onions.
Wasabi and mustard: “I do like a bit of spice, including chilli.”
Jars of homemade pesto: “I’ve got a big herb garden out the back, so once a month I tend to make a pesto with all my basil and rocket. I then pop it into jars and give some away to the in-laws for their pastas.”
Lots and lots of yoghurt: “I think we have every known yoghurt known to man at the moment! Cooper likes the Dora Explorer yoghurt, my partner Simone likes the fat-free yoghurts and I like the normal, tasty yoghurts.”
Free-range chicken: “I tend to use the whole chicken and poach it. I’ll use the stock for my risottos because I don’t like wasting things. The chicken is also great in sandwiches.”
Prosciutto: “At the moment, I’m eating it with figs and mozzarella cheese.”
Smoked salmon: “Great for a snack when I get home from work.”
Champagne: “It’s a bit of a romance thing for Simone and me.”
Ian's verdict
“I don’t tend to eat junk food – I enjoy quality food, such as really good cheese. I’m definitely more of a savoury guy than someone with a sweet tooth. But I’m a chef – I like to taste everything!”
Nutritionist Dr Joanna McMillan's verdict:
"Avocado is fabulously rich in healthy fats, fibre and available vitamin E. My kids love them too. I love that Ian makes his own pesto – so much more delicious than shop-bought.
"It is high in fat, but healthy fat and used sparingly for flavour, it’s a fabulous choice. Prosciutto doesn’t get my vote, I’m afraid – it’s a processed meat. The smoked salmon is better – although it’s salty, it does boost intake of omega-3 fats."
