At home with Masterchef favourite Amina
"She’s very, very caring and openhearted, she cannot even harm a small fly. That’s just her personality."

For MasterChef’s bubbly contestant, family and food go hand-in-hand.

With her ever-present smile and eclectic food philosophy, Amina Elshafei is the MasterChef contestant the whole country has fallen head over heels for. But for her family watching at home, it’s no surprise. "She just opens the fridge and whatever is there she can make something out of it. She is so creative!" says dad Muhammed.

Drawing on her multicultural heritage — her mother was born in South Korea and her father in Egypt — Amina wows the judges with her international palate. But it’s not just her quirky dishes that make her stand out from the crowd. "She is such a kind person… too kind!” laughs her mother, Injoung, 55. It’s not hard to imagine the 27-year-old Amina in her day job as a critical care nurse. "She’s very, very caring and openhearted, she cannot even harm a small fly. That’s just her personality," says Muhammed, 59.

But after years of her sister, Eman, nagging her, Amina finally agreed to put her nursing career on hold and apply for the competition. "I knew how much potential she had," says Eman, 23. "She’s got this really uncanny ability to understand food."

Eman — who shares a flat with Amina in Sydney – dropped everything to support her sister through the initial rounds. "I would have graduated from my law degree last year but because I flew down [to Melbourne] I failed my [final] exam," she says. "But I don’t regret it… I would do it again for her."

To INTRIGUED who posted a comment on 5.7.2012. You are a loser. Havent you heard the law of attraction? Amina is a nice person so naturally she is going to attract nicer responses to people she has met or engages with. YOU on the other hand are an idiot. Get a life you racist bigot!
Goodluck amina, you were my favourite contestant in this season. I am quite upset after your elimination. I think I won't be watching this season anymore. I like all the other contestants as well but debra...... oh gosh why don't they send her back ...she lacks team spirit so should never be a mastered
Amina "is the MasterChef contestant the whole country has fallen head over heels for" Are you kidding?? I for one am not part of the fan club. I really wonder whether Amina would get SO much air time if she wasn't a hijab-wearing Muslim. Honestly, if you add up all the times the camera focuses on her, statistically it is way beyond the average. Also the judges comments are ALWAYS softer for her. Imagine Amina without her head covering and then think of how she would be treated. Just the same as the others...
go amina!!!! i hope you make it to the finals, inshallah.
Go Amina. You have got what it takes to be the next Masterchef winner. Your passion is magnificent, you food it out of this world, your ever present smile brings a ray of sunshine to many viewers. You are my choice to win,
I pray that the islam community can learn from this young girl...and use her as an example of a so called 'good' muslim.. Well done!
Totally agree! What a wonderful person. You have my support, hope you win
