Ita Buttrose named Australian of the year
Publishing icon Ita Buttrose has been named the 2013 Australian of the year!

The 71-year-old Alzheimer’s awareness and fundraising advocate was awarded the Australia Day honour by Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Ita was recognised for her "brilliant and groundbreaking media career" and "championing medical education and healthcare".

Her stellar career saw her go from a 15-year-old copy girl at The Australian Women's Weekly to editor of the magazine.

She also established Cleo magazine and in 1980 became the first female editor of an Australian metropolitan newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, and later the Sunday Telegraph.

Congratulations Ita - well deserved. There are some negative comments, but of course they're from lazy couch potatoes (who've obviously never done anything charitable in their lives) who need to return to school to be taught proper spelling and grammar.
What a fantastic recognition for a well rounded logical woman. I only wish we had more Itas in today's society. Well deserved. Ita you are a classy, respected and very intelligent woman. Well deserved.
Definately well deserved she is an amazing woman!!! Love Ita!!!
Congratulations Ita! Good to see recognition for your talents and care for the public. You will be inspiring to those who have aspirations to follow their dreams.
You have gotta be joking what the hell has she ever done for australia or australians?
A great choice. Wonderful woman and lady who has and is doing amazing things for Australian women and women everywhere and also raising awareness of some very prominent and growing health issues. Congratulations Ita this award is something that should have been given to you many years ago.
Typical another stupid descision by our incompedent Prime Minister Thanks to her our country is stuffed now get he out of that job before there is no going back.
With Australia to become a Republic I can think of one person who would make a great President for the Australian people. The current Australian of The Year Ita Buttrose. Come on people lets make it happen!
Apart from being the Australian of the year I do not understand why that after so many years she still does not realize that her choice of lipstick is horrid!!!! This is a lipstick's color that was in the fashion in the seventies and even then she looked ghastly!!! Her pale complection and light eyes demand something more robust!!! And the fact that she plucks her eyebrows so far apart gives her a look of an alien!!! I mean really nobody has told her yet???
How could I not beleive.. when Ita tells me too oooo About time. Ita has been a rock of an australian legend for how long? So aussie even cold chisel wrote a song about her. Well done Ita.
