The Aussie actor is living every family’s worst nightmare.

It should be the time of Hugh Jackman’s life. Riding high on the success of his blockbuster musical film Les Miserables, the hugely popular Aussie actor is at the peak of his career – with buzz that he’s about to win his first-ever Academy Award.

But behind the ever-present charming smile that fans across the globe have fallen in love with, 44-year-old Hugh’s been grappling with a devastating family secret. His beloved dad Chris, who he describes as “my hero, my rock”, is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease – an incurable, terminal form of dementia. In a revealing interview with theatre trade magazine Parade, Hugh reveals private details about the cruel disease that is tearing apart his family.

“My dad is fairly well into Alzheimer’s now,” Hugh explains. “His short-term memory is pretty much gone.” But he is taking comfort in the fact that it’s not all bad news. “He still recognises me and can talk about the past, and weirdly, he’s as happy as I’ve ever known him, which is wonderful.” Hugh reveals that throughout his Les Mis experience, in which Hugh plays the starring role of Jean Valjean, it’s been Chris – who raised him as a single parent when Hugh’s mother walked out on the family when Hugh was just eight – not that little gold Best Actor Oscar statuette, on his mind.

“There are many qualities about my dad, actually, that echo Valjean more than me,” Hugh tells Parade. “My father has never said a bad word about anybody... He’s a hard worker, very humble, and deeply religious. “Everything about him is admirable… If there are any good qualities about me, I give [credit] largely to my father.” Hugh knows that as Chris’s disease progresses, he and his family – including wife Deborra-lee Furness and children Oscar, 12, and Ava, 7 – are facing an emotional road ahead.

Alzheimer's is a journey for the whole family and psychological and educational support is critical to help families maximise quality of life for their loved one. Looking after your own mental and physical health is one of the best ways to be a more effective carer.
This disease is frightening and the projections of its prevalence in the coming decades is a real concern. We at TrackingCentral Brisbane, hope that we are able to provide a helping hand & some "Peace Of Mind" to family members of loved ones with Alzheimers, The there is a real risk for many Alzheimers sufferers to wander off or becoming lost and or disoriented especially for those who are in the early to mid stages of this condition. Not knowing where a loved one has wandered off to is yet a further source of worry and stress family members do not need. At TrackingCentral we have two products, the CareTracker GPS Personal Locator and GPS Shoes that allow family members and or their carers to be able to locate the whereabouts of the person who has wandered off in a matter of seconds from anywhere in the world. Should you wish to learn more simply search for "TrackingCentral" in google to find us.
My mum has dementia hang in there Hugh they have good days and bad i gave my job up too look after her they raise us too be good people so I look after my mum full time and will not put her in a home like a lot of peple just put them in a home like they forget they had parents that raised them take care and you have a long way too go yet and i am sure you have made your dad proud of you
I too have a father at the same stage of this insidious disease. He has always been a kind and generous man and to watch him slip away is absolutely heartbreaking. I am also thankful that my father, despite no longer remembering my name still knows who I am. We too are just making the most of every moment. Thank you for sharing such an intimate story, it's always wonderful when celebs talk about subjects not often talked about!
I am a nurse consultant in Aged Care and have written a book about my Mother who died a few months ago. She had dementia. It is for when I grow old, for when I need help, can no longer drive, cut my toenails, manage my money, shop, cook, clean, or remember to eat and shower. It is for my children and grandchildren so they’ll know what to do when the time comes, so they’ll know what I want, where to find things, jobs to do etc. It is for all my friends whose parents are ageing and who want to know what to do for the best because there is no time to waste.
Hang in there with him Hugh . I was a carer for years for my husband who had similar problems with his brain but from a car accident many years ago. It's wonderful that he still recognises you as you get a great deal of comfort knowing that he still knows you're his boy. You still have a way to go and the road will get more rocky but at least for now enjoy as much time with him as you possibly can. This would have to be the worst disease anyone can possibly get and I pray to God that they find a cure sooner than later. My husband too was a wonderful gentle soul who loved life and his family more than anything in the world. I miss him terribly but knowing he still recognised me right to the end was indeed a blessing. We need more research money made available because my husband was 64 years old when he passed away. Way to young to die. God bless you all on this journey.

Dearly loved brother died short while ago from Alzheimers. It is a terrible disease and the grief is extended as family have to watch the person "disappearing" in effect. However, the person is still "in there" and they at least have moments when they both recognise you and know who you are, no matter how things may appear! This can be revealed in comments or flashbacks etc. In one way better than some conditions, as prolonged physical pain is not present, but the depression etc that is caused can be dreadful. It is a relief in the end to know their suffering is ended. Should be more high quality public care for this condition, though. Ordinary nursing homes can be torture for those without funds to be able to afford best care and the aggression of the final stages can render living with their family impossible.
My Mum also has this dreaded disease very frustrating for her trying to find the right words and repeating herself time and time again, once a very brilliant woman, extremely strong and independent now relies on others to help her but as Hugh stated she seems the happiest Ive ever known with no cares or worries, guess shes had enough of those during her life time time, time for a rest now.
