Brave Bert's greatest gift
TV legend Bert Newton’s life-saving heart surgery is bringing his shattered family back together again.

Just when Patti Newton thought this year couldn’t get any worse, it did. Within days of taking her husband Bert to the GP with chest pains he’d kept secret for weeks, he was being wheeled into surgery for a life-saving quadruple bypass.

Suddenly, she was faced with the prospect of losing her husband of almost 40 years. It comes at the end of a year in which the much-loved personality has battled her own terrifying health problems, watched her son Matthew spiral out of control, and sat by her granddaughter Lola’s hospital bed when the bub stopped breathing at just three weeks old.

Always the rock of the family, Patti was beginning to crumble. But now, as 74-year-old Bert continues to recuperate in Melbourne’s Epworth Hospital, Patti, 67, is looking to 2013 with renewed hope and enthusiasm, thanks to a simple phone call. On the other end of the line was a voice from the opposite side of the world – that of her troubled son Matthew, who seems to finally be getting his life together.

“He rang to find out how Bert was doing and to send his love,’’ says a source. “It was very special to Patti.’’ In recent times, Bert and Patti have stayed in touch with the actor through his lawyers for updates on his court cases. Matthew, 35, narrowly escaped prison in America after he was charged with trespassing and assaulting a hotel clerk in two separate, rage-fuelled incidents in Miami. He was fined $11,000 and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.

Hi Patti as you know we mothers are the Pillar and the Roof of the house..... I know excatly how yo melt.... one of my gran sons was all blue and not breathing when he was born, I thought that was the end of the world for me but I was standing there and be strong for everyone.... another story when they announce that my gran daughter is partly deaf.... I tell you I was broken and I went to the bath room turn the shower on and had a good loud cry.....but my granson is 5 now will be off to school next year. My grandaughter she just turn 3 and she is my little angle . Patti it's a lesson for you and I not to take things for granted and we should sit down re evaluate our life and enjoy simple little things. Love you Patti, God be with you.
I would just like to say sorry for reporting a comment, I actually didn't mean to, for a sec I thought it read more comments then I realized what I did lol.... Although Tash from Adelaide, how can you say he's not a good role model because he didn't act on his chest pains????? Maybe he wasn't sure what was going on? and maybe he did but was alittle scared.... So what - that doesn''t mean he's a good role model..... I think you need to define what a good role model is.......... Good luck to Bert and his family - life can sure throw some curve balls, we just gotta get up and keep trying- as PINK would say......
My best wishes go to Bert and Patti and their family....wishing Bert a speedy recovery....I have always loved Bert.....he was born on the same day as my departed Dad in the same year.......always will remember Berts Bithday.....hang in there guys next year will be brighter xxxxxx
to Coasty - if they are such great role models then what of Matthew??? Bert and Pattie are great show business ambassadors but they will not win any awards defending a son who needs to take responsibility for his actions. I wish Bert a speedy recovery!!!
I hope Bert recovers and is given the all clear before Matthew loses it again, goes to court and gets away with what ever drug & alcohol stupidity he has done. Best of luck to Bert and Patti.
I have such a soft spot for Bert, Patti and the family and send warm wishes to you all as Bert is recovering from recent surgery. Celebreties or not, life is not always easy and we must face life's challenges as they arise. Family is every thing and I encourage you all to hang in there. keep loving and supporting each other through thick and thin. I have full confidence that in time every thing will heal and the hard times will be just a memory. Will be praying for you. xxx
Is it even remotely possible that Bert & Pattie aren't the most fabulous people in Australian show business. I don't admire many celebrities, but these two are REAL role models.
I would say very silly and unwise Bert, given that he had experienced chest pains for weeks and did not follow up with the doctor! He has had cardiac problems prior to this, so why why why? Not a good role model at all. That apart, all the best to Bert and his family.
