Christina Applegate has opened up about how she came to terms with having a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I miss my exquisite breasts sometimes,” she told More magazine, making reference to a line about her breasts in the comedy Anchorman, in which she starred with Will Farrell.

Christina, who discovered she had breast cancer in 2008, explained how she reacted to the news.

“I was just shaking and then also, immediately, I had to go into ‘take-care-of-business-mode’,” she said.

The 40-year-old credits her family, friends and a spiritual advisor for helping her through the “total emotional collapse” that later followed.

The actress, whose mother is also a breast cancer survivor, says she had no time to grieve the loss of her breasts at the time, after news of her life-saving operation was leaked to the press.

“The good thing is that we got the information out, but talking about the facts of the disease [to others], I didn’t have to see what was going on with me,” she said.

“I think when [the attention] slowed down, it all came crashing down.”

Thankfully, Christina’s cancer was found early due to a doctor-ordered MRI and she has made a full recovery following her surgery.

Now a first-time mum to one-year-old Sadie Grace, Christina says she has overhauled her lifestyle and switched to a more healthy diet.

this debate always gets me cranky .. it shouldnt ever matter who or what sex cancer is cancer - it gets both sexes .. yes men go get Breast Cancer - my Grand Father died from it , other friends have died from bowel , prostate and every other form. What matters is we all need to deal with it and hope we can sort it .. not get into men verses women.. I have two beautiful daughters .. I sincereley hope that they never get Breat Cancer or any other Cancer ... nor their partners when they grow up - what ever sex that may be. When your diagnosed with cancer - all of a sudden its not about prostate vs Breast Cancer - it should be about life. See the forest for the trees - and put your energies into whats important and see it's what you do and care about while you have the chance to .... one things for sure .. none of us are going to get out of this alive ... live for your family, your loved ones and for today i Support anything that helps preventing or helping Women or men with any cancer
At PinkRibbon - you clearly have minimal knowledge of breast cancer, and cancers in general. It is not a simple case of "find a cure", cancer aetiology varies greatly depending on cause and type.
Fact is womens breast cancer charities dominate as far as public donations go, so you can hardly say nothing is done about it - other cancer charities have to make do with the scraps
Hi Pink Ribbon, As a male i take high offense to your post. Ever heard of Prostrate Cancer ? I wish no one had to suffer from such a horrific disease as Cancer in any form but to say more would be done about breast cancer if it affected more Males ?? C'mon that is an awful thing to say, and extremely offensive. Cancer should never be about Male vs Female but finding a cure for all the poor people affected.
in reply to "If breast cancer was an issue for men I'm sure there would be more done about it." There is something similar - its called prostate cancer and its rates, detection and deaths are similar to what breast cancer was more than a decade ago and have largely remained unchanged since then. how about suicide and the funding there? 35 men a week (officially) - and the funding? I challenge you to find it! perhaps you should really be grateful for the research that has been done and the improvements that HAVE occurred.
Men do get Breast Cancer. it's rare and very aggressive.
Molly from Perth said "money spent on useless technologies and wars... "If breast cancer was an issue for men I'm sure there would be more done about it. " Have you heard about Prostate Cancer, Molly? Do you know about the disparity in research funding for Breast Cancer vs Prostate Cancer? I'm sure you meant well, but I think you missed the point. Misandry, anyone?
pink ribbon though unlikely one could think that there is a cure for cancer but the pharmaceutical companies wouldn't want it to be released as there is big money in cancer treatment
I totally agree weebles.Loved her in married with children. Molly, don't know why you had to bring men into it but yes some men do get breast cancer.More wouldn't be done if men were getting breast cancer at the rate women were.Cancer anywhere in the body is major issue not only in the breasts.Re cure for cancer,i'm also amazed there is still no cure for cancer despite billions going into research. Silvia, for a woman losing breast-breasts i compare to a man losing a testicle, very sad.
Actually, breast cancer IS an issue for men as well as women and I think there is more being done about breast cancer than there is of any other cancer, which sometimes frustrates me. Yes, there is a lot of invasive testing that many women have to endure, but men still have the threat of testicular cancer and prostate cancer which can be equally as invasive. I think it seems men don't have as much to worry about because they have less 'parts'. However, there seems to be a lot of promise in finding a cure or a vaccine for breast cancer due to it's nature so I think the money being put into it is fairly well justified..
