Despite speculation it was never meant to be, Monaco's "runaway bride" looks radiant as she celebrates her first wedding anniversary.

This time last year, she was dubbed “Her Miserable Highness” and “Runaway Bride” after three alleged attempts to flee Monaco in the weeks leading up to what should have been the happiest day of her life.

But a year on from Charlene Wittstock’s tear-stained $75 million wedding to Prince Albert II – a wedding that was nearly overshadowed by sensational allegations that the groom had a lover who was pregnant with his third illegitimate child – it seems the blonde princess has finally found her fairytale ending.

The stunning Zimbabwe-born Charlene, a former South African Olympic swimmer, is clearly enjoying royal life far more these days. While Princess Charlene hails from a down-to-earth family a world removed from the aristocratic and glamorous Grimaldis, she’s now at ease in her marriage to the ruler of Monaco.

Whether she’s looking radiant and relaxed at a glamorous Jubilee lunch at Windsor Castle, or laughing her way through a sleigh ride in Finnish Lapland, the statuesque princess appears to have settled into her spot in the global limelight. And through it all, Charlene, 34, has had her prince by her side.

I see a very distressed Princess in this photo. Her eyes look very tired and depressed. Her smile looks fake and she looks like she is putting a show on for the camera's. She is definately not a happy person (rich or not) She is only human and very miserable one at that

This is outrageous! Even rich people have needs and feelings. Can you imagine the challenge of being a public figure on the stage- of having your looks, your fashion sense, your opinions, your taste, held up for scrutiny and possible ridicule? Yes, she lives a life of luxury, but so does a bird in a gilded cage! Are you going to envy her life- do you really want to change places with her?! Let us not forget that even though she was introduced to these luxuries, she wanted out before the wedding took place. Even if she chose her fate, it is still a hard choice and she still has the right to her feelings!If you are fed up because her feelings and opinions are on the front page, don't be! It's not her fault they are there- it's the media! The royal family media people (NOT her) wanted to craft a happy ending for the public, so they got the media to come up with this sappy tale for consumption. If you don't read these news, the media won't print them anymore!
Those who think her eyes are radiating happiness must be kidding themselves - in that picture, anyway. As for the notion that marrying wealth means you have an obligation to be happy - wow, what a shallow concept of how to define a person's entire existence.
Reply to Frances G - Have you seen 'A Royal Affair' ? I recommend you watch it. It is in the cinemas at the moment. Then maybe you will understand what life for a Princess is really like. How do you think it would make her feel to not work? Velvet drapes and ballrooms only excite for so long. And the aim of her life is to provide future heirs... wow.. I am so glad times have moved on for women. I'd rather be free and poor.
Hi there, you know this is great. I run a motel and play playstation all day while my poor wife does all the work and I love this. But lately, she has been talking about me to her friends and I hear these conversations because my ear is on the door listening. Should I start doing more work around the place before she leaves me? I think not.
Even hostages try to smile when told to. She looks terrible! oily skin, glassy eyes with dark rings underneath and a forced smile. Anyone else see this? She looks miserable to me. If this is the best photo they could come up with I wonder how she feels on a bad day?
I mean how hard is it to love a rich guy? She does not have to work, she lives in absolute luxury, she does not have to cook, clean and pay the bills. All she has to do is give the country an heir and a spare and she can do whatever she pleases! So cut it out, Charlene!
