Richard Wilkins: Meet my amazing son
So, at 18, I had a new wife and a Down syndrome son. It was quite a wake-up call. I call Adam my rock as he forced me to grow up all of a sudden and take stock of the situation.

In a candid interview, the entertainment guru tells about the inspirational son who changed his life forever.

Richard Wilkins will never forget the swirl of emotions as he held his child — a beautiful baby boy named Adam — in his arms for the first time. As he looked down at the tiny newborn, Richard — then barely more than a boy himself at just 18 — had an inkling that something wasn’t quite right. Soon after, Richard’s fears were confirmed by doctors. Adam had Down syndrome.

For the young man who went on to become one of our most enduring showbusiness personalities, time stood still. Life, Richard realised in that moment of clarity, would simply never be the same again. "I got lucky for the first time on my 18th birthday and, nine months later, became a father," he says now. "Between all that, I married Lynette, the 16-year-old girl that I didn’t know very well, who was Adam’s mum. I thought I was doing the right thing at the time. So, at 18, I had a new wife and a Down syndrome son. It was quite a wake-up call. I call Adam my rock as he forced me to grow up all of a sudden and take stock of the situation."

That was back in 1973 in the New Zealand city of Palmerston North, where Richard had recently completed high school. "Back in those days, hubbies weren’t exactly encouraged to be in the delivery room cutting umbilical cords. But when I first saw Adam, I just instinctively knew," he said. "I guess it hits you pretty hard — with a thud, actually. I remember having a lot of tests done on me to see what I’d done wrong. I almost wanted to believe that there was something wrong with me — something that I’d passed on. But the tests all came back clear as a bell."

Talking about Adam, Richard’s face lights up, his voice full of pride. It's clear that Adam has brought the Today show’s entertainment editor — now a devoted father of five who lives happily with fiancée Rebecca Naso, who also has two children, Sophie and Zane — immeasurable joy over the past four decades. "I don’t know what I would have done if I had known in advance that Adam was Down syndrome," Richard says softly. "Well, I probably do know what we would have done and that would have been a dreadful mistake. Blessings come in unlikely packages and he is such a joy.

Richard, my daughter at the age of 18years gave birth to what she was told was going to be a healthy child. She was born with downs syndrome but along with that she had many, many health issues. 3 holes in the heart etc etc. Spent most of the 1st year in the Royal Childrens, surgery after surgery, but now at almost 2years of age, she is thriving .We all know she still has a long way to go but she is very quickly getting there. Your story has inspired my so much. This has given me so much hope for the future of our beautiful little grandbaby. Thank you for sharing your story. Adam is very lucky to have such beautiful amazing parents. He knew that would be the case. That's why he chose to be born to you two. Thanls again for the inspiration.
Your experience inspires me. I am 35, no children. I used to be scared of having a disability child. I really can see the joy you get from your children especially Adam. Be brave and enjoy whatever life gives.
Well said Richard. You didnt abandoned your son as some father's tend to do. Thanks for sharing this part of your life with us. I enjoy your work very much & now I know with certainty you are a good person also. Kind Regards Kitty from SA
I read an article a few years ago that Richard Wilkins had abandoned his wife and Adam because it was all too much for him to cope with. I sincerely hope that that article was untrue. It's always easy for cowards to pick up on their child's life years down the track after all the hard work has been done for them.
Father and son have the same hairstyle!
These people are the most beautiful and generously loving people I know. We have a precious grand daughter in our family and her love is so unconditional. She has taught us all so much in her short 6 years. We love her along with her siblings and cousins. She is meant to be here for all the good reasons!!!!!!!!!!!!Take care of your special gift too.
Richard I too have a son with Down Syndrome born when I was 26 years old - perfect pregnancy and arrived on his due date with no fuss - what a blessing he is - his just turned 21 and makes me so proud each and every day - and like you I am so so greatful that we had no idea something was 'wrong' with our boy - as time has gone on I have found there is no such thing as something wrong with a child - good luck and happiness to you and your family - love is the key to happiness and contentment and with our kids that abounds
Which one is which?
OH! if only I had known others had special kids too. When mine was born I was isolated, the father would not admitt our child had big steps to take, the other siblings were under lots of pressure for I had to spend much more time with my special one. Now it is much better that folks are open about their special kiddies. Thanks for the story.
Thank you for allowing us to meet your family. What a great family you have and all so inspirational in their way.
