Coming out for love: Magda's proudest day

Friday, February 17, 2012
"We pay taxes, fight wars for this country, nurse you when you are sick, make you laugh, sing and dance for you, play netball for you, star in your movies, cook your meals, decorate your store window. And the chances are gay people designed whatever it is you’re wearing!"
It was no secret in showbiz circles that Magda Szubanski is gay, but publicly she kept mum – until the gay marriage debate inspired her one-woman crusade.

The decision to “out” herself could not have come easily to Madga Szubanski. It was a secret she seemed determined to keep to herself, often laughing off or deflecting questions about her private life in interviews, while at the same time opening up about the benefits of therapy, and sharing her weight loss journey with Australia – as the country got right behind her.

But the fierce debate over marriage equality finally inspired Magda, 50, to “come out” to her fans and the wider community, to encourage other Aussies to support the Australians for Marriage Equality campaign to legalise same-sex marriage, in a fight that she feels very strongly about.

“I am 1000 per cent in favour of gay marriage,” Magda says. “We pay taxes, fight wars for this country, nurse you when you are sick, make you laugh, sing and dance for you, play netball for you, star in your movies, cook your meals, decorate your store window. And the chances are gay people designed whatever it is you’re wearing!”

Her public declaration about her sexuality comes after some huge changes in Magda’s life, including the loss of her father and her increased public profile on the back of her amazing four-year weight loss journey. As the weight dropped off – 35kg to date – Magda seemed to blossom.

Yeah but will she still be funny? That`s all I care about. Yes she will!
For many gay people, simply legal recognition of their status as a couple is all it's about. If you get all hot and bothered about the word "marriage" and whatever religious connection there may be then just don't use the word and that will take a lot of wind out of the sails of bigots.
who cares if she is gay everybody has a right to live their own life weather or not there gay as long as there happy with the person they are choosing to spend the rest of there life with its not our decision to judge people who judges other people need to have respect because they would'nt like it if they where gay and found the person they wanted to spend the rest of there lives with and found they couldnt because of stupid rules
To all the people who are against the gay community out there get over it. Why must you constantly put down other people's choices in life?? Live your own life and stop worrying about what other people do in theirs. Good on Magda for coming out I praise her for this. For those who call gay people a "minority" I think we should put all those people who are homophobic into a minority as well. Stop bringing religion into it and saying it is not what God wants, He made us all the way we are, gay, straight or any other way. There are so many more important issues in the world going on that I wonder why people still think it is okay to hate on the gay community.
Magda just hasn't met the right man, that's all it is...
Magda. I for one am still a fan. I have friends who are gay and have been together longer than some of my hetrosexual friends. Including my own marriage. One day I hope to dance at their wedding.
Magda, I wish you all the happiness in the world, you deserve it.
I cannot believe I live in a country with so many small minded people. Marriage is about love, love doesn't have a gender. If God is real, doesn't he say love thy neighbour? Why would you just continuously hate on someone just because they are different? You're giving God a bad name. This is why I walked away from religion. People like this. ALSO religion shouldn't come into politics or laws. And yet everyone MUST abide by Catholic or Christian views. Not everyone is religious so no, it shouldn't even be a question. Gay people deserve equal rights. They are HUMAN!! No different to anyone else. How would you feel if you couldn't marry the man, woman you love because everyone else believes it is wrong? How would you feel if it was your wedding day and the whole town had to vote whether or not it can happen, and they vote against it? How crushed would you be? Grow up, people are different. That doesn't mean they don't deserve the right to love or marry. I'm disgusted by some Australian's.
I m sick & tired of hearing about Schapele Corby again and again. She is nothing but a criminal and a drug dealer. So stop talking about her or put her on the spot light. This is ridiculous, there are many other drug dealers and criminals like herself. This is going long enough and who cares about her after all!!!
Sorry Margaret, the best 'mum' I have ever known or seen was a man. They were wonderful parents. It's to do with what's inside, not what's between your legs.
