Her plans for an extended summer family holiday back home in Australia have been dashed by the rigours of royalty.

It was meant to be the ultimate happy homecoming, Crown Princess Mary’s chance to show her four children a true-blue Aussie Christmas. Sadly for Mary, the demands of her royal duty as the future queen of Denmark have seen her forced to shorten her dream holiday, throwing her family into crisis. Yet again, she has been forced to make the agonising choice between following her heart and the demands of the palace.

It was widely reported and expected by her Australian family that Mary, 39, would be here for a traditional family Christmas – a time when the Donaldsons get together for barbies, sumptuous seafood and rowdy, impromptu games of backyard cricket and footy. But according to the Danish Royal Court, Mary and her family must return to Copenhagen, heading off any anticipated furore from Danes that the future queen and heirs to the throne would be celebrating Christmas in another country. It seems Denmark’s royal family and Queen Margrethe have their own traditions which must be observed.

It’s not known when Mary will depart Australia, but she certainly won’t be having the extended holiday that was originally planned. Asked if Mary had been ordered to cut her time in Australia short, a spokesperson from the Danish Consulate remained tight-lipped, only saying, “I cannot comment either way on that.” Showing her customary grace and poise, Mary remains determined to make the most of what must be an emotionally testing time. Radiant and thrilled to be back home under her cherished blue skies, she can’t wait to show off her delightful twins.

Kicking off with the “official’’ part of the visit that will see Mary and Crown Prince Frederik take in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and a surprise outback visit to Broken Hill, the popular princess is making sure this shortened summer trip Down Under will be more pleasure than business. It is more about renewing her romance with her homeland. Mary wants her family to experience an Aussie summer holiday, to take in the sights and sounds of her childhood. The trip is also her chance to introduce her twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 10 months, to her Aussie family and friends.

I am 80 years old, and was taught in early childhood to read and write by the NSW State Correspondence School. There was nothing remarkable about that, except that 90% of your correspondents appear nowadays to be, by comparison, totally illiterate. Presumably this is due to modern technology with text messaging and all the rest of it. Proper literary skills are a thing of the past and I wonder where it is all getting us.
I could not help but laugh after reading this as not one thing was said that makes me think her family is in crisis. Its more a fact that duty calls and cutting trips short would be something that a future queen would know is something that can not be helped, given the position she is in now in life.
I agree with the previous comment. Another media make up that is probably not true. For a start, the visits planned by any Royal Family are usually planned minute by minute months before. Mary would not have "cut her visit short" as it would have been planned well in advance how long she would be staying. Unfortunately, when you are part of a royal family, there are obligations to be met and Mary would well and truly be aware of the expectations she must meet as future Queen. I am sure it comes as part of the package.
I've been watching children dying of poverty and lack of pure water in some countries and in other countries kids and elderly are being a killing target, surely we can call that a crises and not a "Royal family member" that can't spend Christmas with in her home town, when she can fly the whole town to spend Christmas with her at Denmark. Please, there are crises in this world and this is surely not one the least. Stop making us feel sorry for someone whose got everything and anything, and others whom are salvaging to stay alive.
I am sick of seeing Kate Middleton trying to look like Princess Diana, at her age you would think she would have her own style. William must be wishing the same. The three thing's kate will never have, that Di had, is class, style and grace Di will always outshine her their. She was a naturly beautiful woman she will always be, but she is still not able to rest while Kate keeps mimiking her, the royal court should also give her lessons in protacol, as she needs all the help she can get.
Um I think December 1 - December 21 is quite a long holiday. Prince Frederik is heading for Vietnam the moment the official delegation part of the trip is over - so I don't think he would consider not having Chrissy in Hobart as a problem. Mary is kitted out in Prada and Louboutin and currently checking out expensive real estate in Sydney - save your compassion for the starving children in Somalia that the princess is keen to help (unless it involves spending her own money on them). If Mary's relatives want Christmas with Mary they can head for Copenhagen. Actually , I think the real crisis for Mary is that Queen Margrethe appears to be snubbing her family. Last Christmas they weren't invited to the family Christmas, though they were in Denmark, and the parents of the lovely Princess Marie (married to Frederik's brother Joachim) were there.
I'd like to know where the writer get the information that Mary wanted to spend Christmas here on a extented holiday, and wants her children to experience the aussie summer, I think the reason they arrive now is for a visit with Mary's family and the plans to go and spend christmas in denmark was there in the first place all this carry on from the writer I bet mary didnt say anything we all assuming why the press here make mary to be a damzell in distress duty before personal happiness, she married a crown prince, and with this marriage comes a lots of commitment and rules by the danish royal family if she didnt like it she shouldn't married him.
