Oprah Winfrey's secret diaries

The star’s journals give a glimpse into her thoughts and her tumultuous life.

As Oprah Winfrey prepares for the end of her talk show and a brand new chapter in her life, the usually private host has opened up about her dramatic past by revealing the pages of her diaries.

“I’ve been journaling since I was 15,” she writes in the latest issue of O: The Oprah Magazine. But it’s taken until now for Oprah, 57, to share such personal thoughts with the world.

“It’s a wonder that I’ve managed to be a successful human being considering how pathetic I appeared in many of my daily musings,” she says, reflecting on her handwritten entries. “It’s a testament to growth and grace that I’ve come this far… I used my journals as therapy. Oh, the time I wasted worrying about men and weight!”

Oprah certainly isn’t afraid to let readers see the vulnerability in her journals. She is shockingly honest about her love-life, with her insecurities laid bare in emotional entries. The most startling are from her twenties, in what Oprah describes as “my 3-D years, when I was delusional, in denial and damaged”.

During a tumultuous period in her life when she’s admitted to dabbling in drugs, she seems to spend every moment obsessing over men. In an entry dated May 17, 1981, she was in a difficult relationship and talks about how powerless her boyfriend makes her feel. “I want to die... I wish for something to put an end to this madness,” she writes.

With the amount of young adults and Teens thinking about suicide - it is wonderful that here you have a very open and strong celebrity who is willing to reveal ones innermost heartfelt emotions and prove to the young people out there, that life does get better, people do grow in many ways and nothing is ever as bad as it first seems. There is allways hope in ever situation and negative thoughts are part of life. But how we learn to deal with these, is part of growing up. Asking for help and listening are one of the hardest things to learn. But we can manage and we will overcome each hurdle with help. So I say thank you Oprah, and thank you for giving people confidence to explore their own emotions and not feel like they are on the outer.
Ahoy thar, she be blowin' her own trumpet! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRR so she be.
Comparing what is happening in South Africa and what is happening in Australia is like comparing apples and oranges. Get over yourself comment number 2, your just ignorant.
Really when some one writes their personal life in a diary that is it PERSONAL so what Oprah is human. Step in line .......
What about the fact that she has a private school in South Africa and only allows "black" children, no "white" children. There are very many "white" children who are the poorest of the poorest but they are still not allowed entry. If any person opened a school for under-privilleged "white" children only, they would automatically be referred to as a "racist", so why does the term not apply to this case?
I had to smile reading this article - the part about men and weight! I know that my own diaries and journals were full of the same stuff, well into my thirties. It took me that long to realize that my boyfriend and dress size did not define me. Isn't it sad that women judge themselves so harshly on these issues regardless of age, race or background?
