MasterChef in crisis
As MasterChef enters its final few weeks, there’s no doubt the pressure is on. But as the contestants – and the judges – reveal they’ve got their own personal issues to deal with, the show is fast becoming a melting pot of scandals and shock revelations.

“Reality shows like this can become very insular,” says psychologist Sally-Anne McCormack. “Dealing with personal issues can be stressful enough – but add the pressure of filming a television show 24/7 and it can get very intense. Sometimes great friendships can be formed under pressure, but sometimes it can create tension and arguments.”

Fears for Matt's health

Matt Preston is becoming a bigger star every day – literally. Fears for the popular 49-year-old food critic’s health are growing as quickly as his waistline. Matt’s eating, which has included a reported 11 helpings of rich bonemarrow risotto in one sitting, is said to be out of control.

Although enjoying food is part of Matt’s job, the stress of long hours of filming and pressure to make the show a success could be causing the judge to become an emotional eater, says psychologist Sally-Anne McCormack.

“Savouring a mouthful of something delicious can help you zone out of the stresses around you,” she says. “It’s a form of comfort and a way of escaping things for just a moment.”

While fellow judges Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris have managed to remain pleasantly plump, Matt’s expanding girth is putting him at risk of serious conditions such as heart disease.

While George, 31, is careful to do some sport to counteract his eating, he says Matt is stubbornly sedentary. “[He does no exercise] that I know of. We talk about food and we eat,” George says.

Matt can taste up to 24 dishes a day on the MasterChef set. His wife Emma, 45, is so concerned she’s enlisted the help of Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges.

well. i don't know why he doesn't just spit the food out after he tastes it. i and what about the amount of butter in their food i mean .....JEBUS. anyone who eats that much butter will be pushing up daisy's.
It still astonishes me how some people, like those that are knocking Mat Preston above, lack the basic reasonable human ability to have EMPATHY for what someone else is going through. To those people, try and think of what the other person may be going through. It may give you a different perspective on life. Be nice, have fun.
Just because you might have a relatively great life doesn't mean you can't at least try to understand how other people feel. Eating isn't a bad thing, and while Matt Preston definitely goes overboard, have you ever thought about what might be leading to his supposed 'comfort eating'? Besides, it's his life, not yours. I comfort eat too and I'm not exactly the healthiest myself but I can tell you that it's not about greed and gluttony. Public figures have personal issues too and even though they may be different from yours, one would think that people my senior would at least share a view less narrow than that which I have seen. I guess I was wrong.
Niceguy of Sydney - you obviously didn't get what Matt meant by calling Margaret the Godfather. Go to the DVD shop and you will find out. Moo of Perth - not all larger people are gluttons. There are a number of very serious conditions that obesity is a factor. Everyone - I would rather live a short life eating gorgeous, flavourful, exciting food, than live for a 100 years eating brown rice and grilled skinless chicken (becasue the fish has too much mercury). The show is called Masterchef. It is about finding the person who can master chef skills - making meringues, custards, pastry etc. For healthy cooking tips watch the biggest loser. And if Matt Preston is so disgustingly obese - don't watch the show. Turn over and watch something else - or better still go and do some exercise since you all want to be so healthy. Long live all foods with cream, butter and wine.
You can't tell a person's level of health and fitness - whether they are fat or thin. - by looking at them. What "everybody knows" about the correlations between obesity and health (correlations, by the way, not causations) is, quite simply, from media releases on studies that are - wait for it - funded by weight loss companies with a vested interest in the result. If Matt Preston did, in fact, consume the "11 serves" of risotto (portion size not specified) in one sitting as rumoured, so what? Why do total strangers feel justified in acting as the food police, making moral judgements and tut-tutting. Quit being so bloody judgemental, and lay off the man. It's none of your - or George's - business.
i cant belive what im reading get a life !!! leave masterchef alone they doing a great job instead of judging people Lets work on Our own faults "who will throw the first stone" !!!
wow arent we a judgemental nation!!! matt prestons weight or other issues is no-one elses problem but his and his family. why do australians have to be so mean and nasty!!
If people watch the show properly they would realise the judges don't eat the whole meal thats put in front of them, instead it's a spoonful (sometimes it's not even that). It's easy to say do more exercise and eat less, but things aren't so black and white.
matt is one of masterchefs well known judges and also a food critic no wonder he is over weight. I think it would be hard for someone to lose weight while constantly having your everyday life evovle around food. Matt should lose weight as he is at health risks and needs to change his eating habbits though it won't be an easy challenge for him. BEST OF LUCK MATT
he is the cream of all cream dessert chiefs out there and he is only doing his job what he loves and as far as i can see most of u are all sour with envy he knows the raw deal in the job and let him be i take my hat of to all the master chiefs in the world do what makes you happy i say
