Schapelle targeted over tell-all book

Monday, November 2, 2009
Schapelle Corby's supporters fear her nightmare life in a Bali jail will worsen as a new exposé threatens her physical safety. FRANK THORNE and ALAN SHADRAKE report.

She's the most famous prisoner in Bali's corrupt and filthy Kerobokan Prison. Mentally unstable, protesting her innocence and drawing a constant stream of publicity to the drug infested jail, Schapelle Corby has already suffered retribution at the hands of guards and prisoners.

Now, with the publication of a sensational new book, which details a rampant drug culture, violent assaults and even murders, Schapelle's safety behind Kerobokan's walls is more fragile than it has ever been.

Bali Nine prisoner Renae Lawrence, who is close to Schapelle, voiced the fury of the Australians housed within Kerobokan, saying journalist Kathryn Bonella's book will do Schapelle serious harm.

"She's already under great mental strain, and this will make her more unpopular with the guards," says Renae who, as trustee and head of the women's block, has previously been appointed Schapelle's guardian to ensure she takes her medication on time every day.

"They don't like her because to them she's a troublemaker. And they could easily get back at her in different ways, making her life even more nightmarish."

Renae – who has been credited with saving Schapelle's life by coaxing her down from a prison water tower when she was threatening to jump – said it wasn't only the fact that Schapelle was being targeted putting her at threat.

"It's this kind of tension that's taking its toll on her mental state and could easily push her over the edge. I'm really worried for her. She's already said she would rather be dead. This is like a death sentence for her…"

I think some of you people on here are just cruel. I think that our airport is to blame for this and now shappelle has to be the one that has to do the time... i think she s innocent but even if she wasnt thats not a way to live.. she will die before she has a chance to come out and try a move on with life.. it is very sad and alot of you should be ashamed of yourselfs.. i think its pathetic that they wont help or even get someone to come in and help her... KEEP FIGHTING SHAPPELLE YOU WILL GET THROUGH IT.. AND I HOPE THEY BRING YOU HOME... MISS YOU LOVE YOU
Are you people really stupid enough to think if the Indo's say she's guilty, she's guilty?? What a sheltered & idealistic life you all live. The fact of the matter is that country is about as corrupt as they come...very little that happens in that place is "fair". As mentioned in a previous response - her case would have been thrown out in an Aussie court. Have a look at what she has been through - lesson learned here i think - enough is definately ENOUGH!!!!
If you commit a crime, you should do time. If you are innocent, you should not be punished. Schapelle has been punished, immeasurably, and the longer she remains in the squalor, hatred & violence of Hotel K, trying to cope with the agony of her wrongful imprisonment, the more she will suffer. Coupled with this, she is now seriously mentally ill, and in desperate need of proper medical treatment away from a prison environment. Her government need to negotiate her release on humanitarian grounds, sooner rather than later, and certainly before it's too late. I know that many cannot grasp the truth of Schapelle's innocence. They have had their opinions manipulated and their eyes blinded. Indeed, those still proclaiming Schapelle's innocence, like myself, are probably in the minority. Gandhi once said, "Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth. An error does not become the truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it."
Everyone seems to forget how our airports are so bloody innocent in this case. Gee not to mention the one person that may have helped Schapelle get out of there OH thats right he got killed when he got back to jail in Australia once he gave evedience in Bali to help her. And last but not least the graet Australian goverment who had already been investigating bagage handlers at the airports. That's why they didnt help her she would have ruined there case. I put myself in Schapelles shoes I would look as guilty as charged ONLY because my FAMILY have a (Past) history with drugs. But I would NEVER do that. But in the small minds of people who put all there faith in what the media say. I say to them I hope it doesnt happen to U or any of your innocent friends. KEPP FIGHTING SCHAPELLE FIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY HONEY. I'd love to see you come home.
I WILL NEVER, EVER MAKE BALI ONE OF MY HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS....I WOULD RATHER GO TO AFGANISTAN AND TAKE MY CHANCES.
I AM SORRY FOR THIS WOMAN BUT, SHE IS GOING TO HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE CONSECUENCES.
Yes, bring her back to our 5 stars prison where it is air conditioned cell, coloured television and the comfort where normal people could not even afford. What do you expect prison to be. Hope this will be a good lesson to all Australians who decide to break the laws of other countries.
...you do the time. Simple as that. And if you're stupid enough to be caught taking drugs into a place like Bali, you deserve all you get.
Some of the spiteful comments on here make me ashamed to be Australian. This poor woman has endured such cruelty, and is mentally ill. Yet such spiteful terrible remarks are made by those who want more of the same for her. She cannot take much more or she will die. Is that what they want? How short memories are too. Can people not remember the burning of the evidence, the refusal to test it for origin, Schapelle begging for CCTV tapes to clear her, and so much more? Here is a clue - it suggests that she is innocent. Then the 20 year sentence being more than murderers and terrorists. This is why she has fallen apart. Innocent people cannot endure the same as the guilty can, because they know they should not be there. Unless the government fulfills its responsibility to a mentally ill citizen who is dying, she will indeed die. That will shame our nation for ever.
To be perfectly honest I haven't read the book, so I can not comment on the details that may have negative or positive affects on Shappelle and other Australians detained in hotel K. I do have to agree that the Australian Government could have done more ( as pointed out by Bazil) and as (K Danes) pointed out that the effect is minimal. I believe that Shappelle is innoncent, the notion that the Bali judicial system is corrupt is perfectly feasable. Lets not forget, she checked her bags in at Brisbane, changed planes in Sydney(bags moved from one to plane to another, by airport staff), then gets to Bali and there is only one customs officer (not their normal protocal). And as (A Collins posted) the evidence is circumstantial at best. And as far as all the publicity received, well maybe if the Australian government had stepped in at the right time, instead of having the majority of the nation chastise them for their part in it all. There would most likely be very little publicity
