Scientology showdown – Katie storms out

A distraught Katie Holmes has stormed out of a crisis meeting with her husband Tom Cruise, furious over damaging publicity about his Scientology beliefs, and humiliated over the disastrous reaction to the movie he told her to make.

The actress is said to be inconsolable after a string of leaked Scientology videos, featuring her husband saluting a portrait of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, declaring war on psychiatry and claiming that members of his religion are "the only ones who can really help" accident victims, have flooded the Internet and divided Hollywood.

"Oh, I'm going hard on those guys and their reign … psychiatrists," says Tom in one disturbing video. "It's disgusting to me. No mercy … none. Psychiatry doesn't work.

"When you study the effects, it's a crime against humanity."

Katie had already been forced to fend off questions about Andrew Morton's controversial book Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography. While at first Katie put on a brave face, declaring that she and Tom weren't bothered by the book, after this new scandal she can no longer ignore the Hollywood backlash…

Since when do you need to pay someone to help you find religion? If you really wanted religion in your life, all you would need is the written word of that religion. Why, like Hillsong, do you need to give a certain percentage of your annual wage for them to teach you their religion? I just don't understand this part of it. Why do they need to take your money away for you to find God?

amazing how this article is getting spammed, on one side we have thos against the church of scientology that state facts, and pro-scientologists who speaks about their ideas, feelings, and how tom cruise has done much good to the community and about freedom of religion. All of this with a countable number of ridicule spelling mistakes. Anonymous, get yourself together and learn to argue properly. CoS members, if your church is so non-profit, I hereby request that all the buildings and estates they have bought since it4s foundation be sold and used to fight poverty in places such as... Africa? for example?

I ask anyone who sides with Scientology this question, if this "religion" is as harmless as you say, why did Lisa McPherson have to die? Why have many low level Scientologists been forced to pay huge sums of money to the church itself? It's a fine "religion" if you are a Tom Cruise or a John Travolta who possess wealth. But it is far more harmful than you think. Educate yourself on the Cult's many sins against humanity. Read about how they infiltrated the United States' most top secret files with Operation Snow White. Stop being so ignorant about Scientology. This is a cult that has killed followers and perpetrated illegal activities for decades.

I am really disgusted in Tom and many people criticising Psychiatry. Most of you are fortunate enough to not have mental illness. And you have no right to say Heath Ledger died by the hand of psychiatrists. I have a psychiatric history and I have been on the medications that Heath was on. Firstly Benzodiazepines are used to treat anxiety disorders. They are effective and relatively armless. Unfortunately in higher doses it can affect the respiratory system etc. Heath's death upset me but it was an accident. i don't blame Heath or anyone else for his death. He didn't mean to do it so let him rest in peace. My psychiatrist is the reason I'm here today. 4 years ago I tried to take my life and almost died. My psychiatrist helped me through that and has been helping me even since in finding happiness. There are thousands of people like me in Melbourne that know psychiatry works. We just stay silent to avoid people like you telling us that we are hopeless and will not get better etc.

I feel sorry for them as everything they say is reported and scrutinised, but why can't Tom be like John Travolta, he is a Scientologist and so are so many other famous people but they do not go around throwing accusations on other people. I believe people have the right to choose what religion they want to follow but they should not be critical of other religions or faith or professions that people partake in.

"Talking about it" and E-Meter ( which are shoddy lie detectors ) are sometimes not enough. Has Dianetics successfully treated deep depression, or severe Bipolar or Schizo affective disorders? We know how well it worked for Lisa McPherson, right? She was in Church care during her breakdown, and she came out dead. Most of you had minor problems in comparison, probably marital issues, or a string of bad luck, or a bad marriage. And like a lot of people, you turned to 'religion' for support. Sokay, people do that. But unlike buddhism, or Christianity, in which you might pay at most 10% of your income as a tithe, or nothing at all, Scientology costs fat cash. And really, are any of you OT3? Can you fly? Kill people with a thought? If the beliefs are all that matter, why not join the Freezoners? Why does David Miscavige live in Luxury while sea orgers and others suffer in cramped conditions, and paid almost nothing while the church gets all their money.

So many people defend scientology, saying it's a harmless if quirky religion. But the simple facts are that scientology is a cult, founded by the sci-fi writer Ron Hubbard to make a few bucks. Scientology does not promote peace and love between men, it encourages its members to use legal and physical force to destroy those who speak out against the "church". Look up the Fair Game Policy on wikipedia. Lisa McPherson died in a scientologist hotel, locked in a room with no food or water. She was covered in cockroach bites. A man leaped from his hotel room window to his death, clutching his last few dollars, the only money he had not yet given to the church for "auditing" sessions.
