The power of positive affirmations

Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Do you bound out of bed each morning full of enthusiasm, confidence and positive vibes for the day ahead? It can be hard to be upbeat 24/7 (especially if you’re not a morning person!), even for the most optimistic women. Likewise, at the end of the day, it can be a struggle to wind down and see the positive sides of leading such a hectic life.

So when your day feels a bit overwhelming, it can be useful to pause for a moment to remember all those things that make you the confident, happy person that you are. Think about the big issues – the love of family and friends, a comfortable home, a rewarding job; and don’t forget the little stuff like knowing that the dress you’re wearing today always attracts compliments (‘cause it’s important to have both inner and outer confidence).

Here, we reveal some of the confidence secrets women like you use every day to pep themselves up. Read on and be inspired – it’s all about creating positive vibes. You might have similar ideas about how to boost your confidence, or maybe you’d like to add your own thoughts … go ahead and contribute!

Lots of women have told us that looking good on the outside makes them feel confident on the inside. "My confidence secret is wearing clothes that suit my body and make me feel sexy and fabulous," says Katrina. Frances agrees: "Confidence is putting on my fave little black dress with high heels and my hair curled." So does Emily, simply saying, “Confidence is shoulders back and a good bronzer!"

Keeping fit and healthy is also a good way to boost your feelings of confidence. "Being physically active has a huge impact on self-confidence,” Gordana comments. “By working out you will improve your physical appearance and accomplish something positive.”

Sometimes, the secret to confidence can be hidden – lots of women have confided that when they wear matching underwear, they feel an extra surge of confidence. Like Tamara says, "Confidence is wearing sexy red lingerie under an executive business suit while presenting in a board meeting!"

Another key to feeling confident is thinking positively and believing in yourself. Deb told us, "Think good thoughts every day, the boost to your confidence certainly pays!” and Ashlee said, "Confidence comes from doing the right thing, knowing that you are acting morally, ethically and in accord with your personal values.” Amanda agrees, saying, "Think about others rather than focusing on yourself; thoughtful action brings confidence to do more in life.”

Finally, you can never underestimate the love of others to make you feel positive and confident about yourself. "My secret to confidence is knowing that I have a loving husband and kids at home," Valdarie told us. Susan agrees, "I feel confident because I know I have the backing of my family and friends.” Here, here!
