An elaborate wedding

, Prev Next

I've been to some pretty elaborate weddings in my time, but none can compare to my recent experience of my first traditional Indian wedding, which went for three whole days. (Don't worry, we were allowed to go home and sleep in between!)

The first evening was a singing and dancing extravaganza, with a cast that included my husband and other old schoolmates of the groom, Deepak, doing a Bollywood dance.

It's hard to know what was more entertaining — the dance itself or the frenzy of excitement beforehand. "My mind's gone blank — what comes first, 'light globe fingers' or 'Vogue arms'?" cried one, minutes before hitting the stage.

Day two was the wedding ceremony itself, which began with a group of us singing and banging drums around the groom, who was sitting astride a horse. (Did I mention this was an elaborate wedding?)

Held at the bride's parents' house in a suburb of Sydney, the neighbours are probably still recovering from the sight of 50 people dressed in colourful saris dancing up the road with a horse in tow. The beautiful bride Shruti's arrival was suitably dramatic and she wore so much beading and bling that she admitted she was concerned that she was going to topple into the bridal fire that burnt in the middle of the crystal altar. (Did I mention this was an elaborate wedding?)

By day three — a reception on a glass boat on Sydney harbour, complete with speeches, toasts, more dancing and more bling — there was no doubt that this couple was well and truly married. In fact, their wedding had lasted longer than Britney Spears' first marriage. Now, if that's not cause for a celebration, I don't know what is!
