Signature look

Aaaah kids... honest little things aren't they? Especially when it comes to commenting on your appearance.

Take my eight-year-old son Max for example. Last week I walked out of my bedroom after getting dressed for work and was confronted by a very perplexed-looking Max looking me up and down. "Are you wearing that to work?" he asked. "Um, yes," I replied. "Why?" He looked me up and down again and said, "Well, it's just that you look... well... you look... um..."

Attempting to help Max finish his sentence, I offered up a few adjectives: beautiful, ravishing, breathtaking? "No," he replied, rubbing his chin with thought. "How do I say this... Well let me put it this way — that isn't my favourite dress on you. At all."

OK then. Did you like the way he threw in the "at all" at the end just to really get the point across? Brought back memories of the time my niece walked in on me in the shower and screamed with horror, saying that I had the largest backside she'd EVER seen. Needless to say she didn't get a birthday present that year...

When I mentioned Max's criticism of my outfit that day, one of the Woman's Day staff said she'd encountered a similar attack from her 10-year-old daughter the day before.

"Didn't you wear those pants yesterday?" her daughter asked after she dressed for work. The Woman's Day staffer defensively replied that it was two days ago, to which the young girl said, "What are you going for — a signature look or something?" No more Project Runway for her...
